Bought Some Flukes.

Went out on the dam the other day and tried out my 5" pearl flukes.
With the water then at 55 degrees, bass (about 1lb) exploded on it.

In the summer, are these baits effective on larger fish? Has anyone ever caught 5lb + fish on one? How often would you expect to catch big bass on a fluke?

I have skipped flukes under branches in the summer and caught good #'s of bass, but I have honestly not caught anything over 3 1/2 lbs on a fluke. I have also used flukes successfully as topwaters/shallow divers in the summer both early in the morning and at dusk by twitching them quickly with short pauses. I fish them around weedlines for largemouths and rocky islands for smallmouths. For a bigger bass: I would imagine you could fish it in deeper water (6-10 ft. rather than up shallow), put a small finishing nail inside the body of the fluke (to weigh it down), and fish it slower (with longer pauses). GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

I'm guessing you missed that post where Lizards caught 3 bass over 10lbs. in two days. I think he said two of them were on flukes. or one..maybe they were on lizards...don't remember now...maybe I better go recheck that.

Seaphantom, I have a buddy (Plasticsman is his name on this site, he only reads the columns but never posts). Anyone, this buddy religiously fishes flukes. His favorite is a smoke colored fluke from Case (it is grey with silver fleck) which he rigs on a red 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu hook. I can honestly say that there have been days when I was kicking his *** and then he would tie on a fluke and start catching serious fish. Sometimes I want to throw his flukes in the lake so he can't catch up to my numbers.

I got a buddy in ga. that fishes tourneys everyweek with one bait, the fluke , he's hooked on em, I like them too with a barrel swivel about 15 inches in front of the fluke, to avoid line twist...there are many bait companies that make variations of a fluke btw..I started with the sluggo, but the fluke rules!

Buzz Wrong answer. The third fish was on a "Domestic" Shiner, not a Golden Shiner.

As for Flukes catching Big Bass . Well lets see here, my first bass over 5lbs came on a fluke, and probably about 4 or 5 others other 5lbs to boot( in Indiana). And of course I caught a 10.83lb, and a 11.27lb bass on flukes. I prefer the Fin-S Fish however. I believe they are 7.5" www.lunkercity.com . It's bigger than a super fluke that is shown. Big bass eat bait fish all the time, why wouldn't they eat something that looks like a wounded bait fish

Fish more often, and fish where the big fish are, and I guarantee you'll catch "BIG" Bass

There are a lot of small bass here, so maybe the hawgs will go for the bb flukes
