Without knowing what part of the country you are from and if you are fishing lakes or ponds it's hard to get real specific because we don't know exactly what kind of forage and cover/structure you will be dealing with. As the water cools down the baitfish will move shallow and the bass will follow them. Topwater baits early and late in the day can be awesome. I like buzzbaits because I can cover a lot of water quickly so without wasting precious low light time I can find fish and then slow down and work the areas holding fish a lot harder with walking baits like spooks or popping baits like a Pop R. Spinnerbaits are generally good after the topwater bite falls off especially if you have some wind. Shallow crankbaits are another good option for all times of the day. Fish will often times school up busting baitfish on the surface in the fall so keep a Rat-L-Trap, topwater bait, or any other shad type offering ready to roll incase you get lucky and happen across a school of aggresive fish.

What was the water temp in Aug? I am assuming it was higher, but if it was only a few degrees it may not make much difference, if it has cooled off 8 -10 degrees it may put some of the fish into a fall type pattern. One of the first things bass do when they go into the fall pattern is they move to more shallow water. What is the primary forage, is it bluegill, shad, or herring? I would try to match the size and color of whatever the primary forage is. Look for shad busting the surface, look for birds on the shorline shallow, both indicators that there are baitfish present, find their food and you will find them, match what they are eating and you will get bit.

Sorry rev, may have created some confusion by using the term forage, it does usally refer to plant material, in this case I was wondering what the primary food source for you local fish were, ie.. bluegill, herring, shad, crawfish etc...

I like c-rigs ideas as well, if I were to throw just one thing, it would be a rattletrap.

We've had similar lake conditions in GA, and the trap is working well right now!

An example of a Tn lake that was 85 f several weeks ago is now 76F main is ky lake, and just about any other lake pattern would fit it somewhere,it has a deep channel but is a flooded river fishery, very little grass this year exception pondweed and lily pads in some bays.Bay mouths and points where it meets the main right now is tops if gravel.
Even though they can be caught deep on ledges still the quality fish for several weeks have been coming from 6-8 ft,start topwater early on points, then go tad deeper with slower baits later
Or one can go shallow and fish veggies, sometimes im as deep as 2 1/2 ft,and normally all summer long when its about 4 ft as this is a drawdown lake, just not this year they vacated when it hit 100 plus air temps and 90 watertemp.
But just like the point pattern they to are awakening.
Schoolers play an important role in the fall. This is south end Birdsong creek and its 74F,always tad cooler.
