FishFool, I do not personally own one but I do know some about this reel. Many people make the mistake and think that it is a graphite reel based on the popular Curado and Citica E series. There are a few things about it that make it different other than the fact it is built on a graphite frame. Two to the biggest differences are that it does not have the Super Free pinion design, and it also does not have HEG gearing. A lot of people including myself feel that the Citica E, which can be found for a few dollars more offers a lot more reel for a minimal price increase. If you decide to get one, let us know how you like it.

Spend the extra $20 and get a Citica. It's a decent reel for the money, and I'd take it over the Caenan any day.

Do you fish RH or LH reels?

I don't see why Shimano came out with Caenan. It's a waste if you think about it. Brand new Citica's (which have ALUMINUM frames, much sturdier than graphite) can be found for $90 - $95 on eBay, roughly the price of a Caenan retail. Get a Citica..

Shimano introduced the Caenan to try to compete in the sub $100 price market. If you want a new reel, and if you are only willing to use Shimano reels, and if $90 is your absolute cap, then this is the reel for you. However, there are several reels from other brands that are of a much higher quality level that sell for less money. The Shimano Citica is a very good reel that seems to be priced comparably to it's competiton. The Caenan is a decent quality reel, but it seems to be priced higher than it's closest competitors level. For reels in that price range, It would be very hard to beat a BPS Pro Qualifier. I would also have to rank the Academy H2O reels as equal or higher and the Bps Extreme would also exceed the caenan on my list of sub $100 reels. This is only my opinion based on having worked on these reels and compared the overall quality of components and construction.

I have a Caenan and have had the Pro Qualifier. If you spend a few more for the Citica then you might as well spend a few more for the Curado. Then you,re out of the price point you initially started with. Just like you can find a Citica cheaper on eBay you can also find the Caenan cheaper. My point is get the Caenan if that's what you've been eyeing for that $100 price range. Right now a lot of places have it on sale for about $70. I haven't touched my bait casters since I got the Caenan. Not because my other reels are inferior, but the Caenan feels like an extensions of my hand. It's light and casts a mile with no backlash issues. I can place lures precisely where I want them even in the wind. Don't get too caught up in all the technical specs. Bottom line is does it perform and are you putting fish in the boat or in my case on the bank. That's what I've been doing with it so I'm on eBay now looking for another.
