I can't feel the bite with my wacky rigged Tiki stick
I have been having good action with this rig but I cant feel the bite with 8 lb mono until after they are hooked. I have been dead sticking the bait and the fish are getting hooked too deep. I have been catching them in a shallow river with slight current and usualy windy. What would be a better rig, I dont want to kill any fish. The fish dont seem to bite on anything but the weightless worm. Thanks!

When I use the wacky rig senko, I let it sink for a while, then slowly lift my rodtip up to "flag" the bass that its there, then repeat. Doing this, I'd say that about 80% of my bass are hooked right in the top of the mouth. Wacky rig should be starting to really produce this time of year.

What kind/size of hook are you using? It may be too small.

Switch to a line with slightly less stretch to help in the sensitivity department.
Also, at least for me, more often than not, I experience more of a tugging/nibbling vs. a definite thump. What rod are you using? I hope it isn't the rod. I used to use my medium light trout rod and couldn't feel the bite until late in the game, but now that I use my Lamiglas Certified Pro, it's almost not fair to the fish. I can feel them breathe!

If they are getting hooked deep on a wacky rig I'd say it is just the opposite-too big. I use either a Gamakatsu wide gap finesse hook or Gamakatsu weedless wide gap finesse hook. It is a smaller hook similar to a circle or live bait hook. I've never had one hooked deep, but if they do the hook is small enough to remove. I do occasionally have the problem deep hooking when rigging one weedless/weightless. What I have started to do is if I even think I have a fish I set the hook. I've found doing that cuts down on the deep hooking.

you have to be ever present of your line moving, as well.
Do you finger the line while fishing this way? I can't fish a soft plastic without doing so, anymore and it helps with feeling things very well. |

Thanks for all the tips! I will try a smaller hook and fingering the line. I have not tried that method. When I put on new line I will try something more sensitive. I will try these things befroe I look at changing rods. Right now I am using a medium action Lightning rod. Thanks again!

The biggest thing you need to do when wacky riggin is learn to watch your line. Look at it where it enters the water and watch it much like you would watch a bobber. Any un-natural movement, and you lift up to feel for tension. If you feel any tension, swing. Presto, fish on, start reelin.
When I wacky rig stuff, I see probably 90% of the bites and feel about 10% of them. |

Some good advice above. However no one stated that if you line quits falling/moving, check for weight on the line. You really do need to raise the rod tip up more often and feel for anything heavy/resistance. Just letting it sit for 30 seconds could mean the bass already swallowed it. At that point unless you wait long enough for him to spit it up, then it's gonna be gut/deep hooked.

The line is usually slack and it is hard to see movement with the line laying on top of the water. The water is around 3' deep at the most and clear with a mud bottom. What would be a good line to use with the wacky rig. Right now I have Stren blue colored line 8 lb test.

You may have to much slack out, if that's what it is then pick up your slack or match the line, you will know when you get them.

Make sure of no slack line! I would pinch down the barbs as it takes less power to penetrate the hook. Also think about fluorocarbon.

The rod as mentioned earlier can play a major role. You can make the rod more sensitive by balancing it correctly. It works for some folks and doesn't for others, but it's worth a shot. Usually adding a rubber cap (used on chair legs) and flat washers to the butt can do the trick.

Would braided line not be a good choice since it has little or no stretch? And why not use a circle hook since the hook is exposed anyway when rigged wacky style?

Keep A Finger And An Eye On The Line. Definetly Use Some Low Stretch Line.
