when to crank?

I've got several lures in my bass fishing arsenal, jerkbaits, worms, craws, spinnerbaits, and working on PNJs and c-rigs. I've got a lure to use for most situations I face, when is it best to crank (including rat-l-traps) as opposed to doing anything else?

You might possibly want to consider throwing cranks when you have a very defined depth at which the weed tops reach. For example, if you have weeds tops 6 feet deep, then you want to throw a crank that dives 5 feet deep. I love fishing with cranks.

Rocky areas try craw colored cranks. Scattered weeds, try bluegill colored. Ledges, dropoffs, humps, flates and coves try shad or bluegill color.You can throw a crankbait anywhere any other technique would be used, except in water deeper than 20' and in stuff too thick. You know, the stuiff where you HAVE to have a weedless lure. Don't limit yourself to only useing them in limited situations. If you think there is a fish there, and it is an area that would normally not see a crank, if possible, throw em one.Then hang on. you'll be ringing a dinner bell of a new kind.

Crankbaits can be used for locating fish. If you catch a few agressive ones on crankbaits then the area can be picked apart with plastics and or jigs.

I throw crankbaits all year.
It doesn't matter what the structure is.
Crankbaits catch alot of fish. Winter or summer it doesn't matter.
Anytime is crankbait time.
It's just an issue of deterimining which crankbait to use reguarding existing conditions.

bassman is 100% right the biggest issue is chosing the right crank bait. imo this is why cranking is so hard to master.
