Trolling motor repair

I have a MotorGuide 54 # transom mount trolling motor. I damaged the depth adjustment collar and need to replace it. I have the new collar, which I picked up at the parts dept at our BPS. The service guys had left for the day, but the parts guy told me that in order to replace the old collar with the new collar, I would have to remove the head of the motor from the shaft. I would then be able to slip the old collar off and slip the new collar on. The collar rests just above the tension adjustment. My question is what can I expect when removing the head assembly from the shaft? I've never torn into a trolling motor before. It looks like there are 3 screws to remove from the underside of the motor head to get me started. After that I have no idea what I am going to run into. Has anyone ever removed their trolling motor head assembly? And if so, what all is involved in doing so?

I/ve replaced the lower half of the T/m head on my Minn Kota, M/G should be similiar. Remove the upper half of T/m head - 4 screws underside of lower half. Disconnect the power wires (spade clips) for black & red. Top of T/m shaft is splined - remove the cable steering pully on top of the shaft. You may want to tape the cable at the pully to keep it intact. Remove the 3 screws holding the lower half of the T/M head to shaft. Lower half lifts off. You shold be able to slide the collar on at that point. Be careful once you've disassembled the T/m head not to move the shaft too much, there is a set of bearings at the top, and they are relatively easy to damage. Reverse the order to reassemble.
