Default A little about Crayfish

Since posting about matching the hatch...the local who makes traps and checks the color of the craws before fishing the upper, rocky reservoir for smallies...... I've learned from responses on a variety of boards....

Most agree on one board it's not necessary to match the hatch. On another board (this one) I learned a body of water can contain several species and therefore the ones in the traps will be colored differently from each other....

Another board mentioned that if you have a choice of sizes, fish the smallest one first.

Another thought......break one or both the craw pincers off before use.

One fellow suggested just using the meat from the tail and letting it slowly fall to bottom in a rocky area on a weightless hook.

Softshell craws are preferred over the hardshells and one fellow looks at the hardshell craw, then uses more faded colors in the same color range.

There are over 300 species in the US alone.

A couple fellows from Canada will be using the craw trap for minnows as well by using bread or chips for bait.

One fellow states that chopped onion works extremely well for drawing minnows.

When imitating a craw with a tube.....the tail works better when missing every third tentacle. After rigging weightless with a wide gap hook, crimping on a splitshot on the outside bottom of the hook works well in that it ticks the rocks, rocks the lure and flails the tail.

I got a mixed response, as you can tell, but learned a bit along the way. Just wanted to share.

Good fishing, Mac
