Default Back story of this site?

Anyone know and care to give the back story of this site? There seems to be a dozen guys that keep the forums breathing, but the rest of the site appears to be firmly locked at 2010. I don't ask for any reason except my curiosity.

A while back, we had a lot of issues with spammers signing up and posting crap all over the place. To stop that, Kevin, the owner, shut down registration, so no new members can sign up now.
It used to be a lot more lively than it is now, but with no new blood coming in, it's starting to stagnate.

Prior to that there were issues with a few disruptive members also, which may have created a few hard feelings and caused another few to leave. I think they have been banned, so that problem solved and along with closing the registration to keep out spammers only the few, the brave, remain and we can't draw new blood. Some guys, like the above poster, you could not drive away with a stick - which is a good thing! Among the few that do remain, many of us have actually met each other (at previous gatherings under the BF.com banner) which helps strengthen the friendships, as we keep in touch though this website.

Yeah, right, lots of luck there.

Anyway I don't know who the OP considers the core group but as per my comment about meeting several that I consider the core group, I've met:

nofearengineer
MississippiBoy
Woody
Keithdog
bamabassman (and Lisa!)
WTL
Bcklash
BigBassin144 (and his dad)
BassinBandit
nobass

I hope I didn't miss anyone!

I really don't know about anything before 2011 when I joined the forums except what you gather from reading old posts and stuff. It appears that Kevin must have gotten very busy with the duties of life and other interests and responsibilities sometime in the spring of 2011. I can understand and appreciate that.

As for the forums (the only reason I joined) there are actually closer to a hundred + guys that still post (some more than others). Even after Kevin closed the forums to new members (temporarily) I still enjoy clicking on and seeing what's going on with everybody and posting when I can. This is only a guess but I'm convinced that 10 to 20+ % of the "guests" you see viewing the forums are actually members that just don't log on unless they're going to post (I'm sure I'm not the only one).

In my real world, the number of guys that I know that share this same passion for Bass fishing can be counted on one hand, and like most of us they are often busy etc. I like coming here and knowing that 99% of the guys "speak the language" and walk the walk. Whether it's fishing or sports or politics or faith or whatever, humans will always be drawn to and want to be around like minded people. Even the few guys here that I don't like very much are still way more likeable than the average swinging **** I happen to encounter in the physical world.

So if I've never actually met you I should keep my posting for another site?
Or should the core group consider getting together further North.

And before I quit posting COULD THE CORE GROUP EMAIL KEVIN AND FIND OUT IF HIS PLAN IS TO LET THE SITE DIE!

I haven't been able to get on here as much lately as I used to, or would like to. It seems like I have just been really busy lately with everyday type stuff and on top of that I have been fishing a lot harder the last few years in an attempt to take my tournament fishing to the next level. I still drop by quite a bit and see what's going on but I don't post as often. I have met a lot of the members here at the Kentucky Lake gathering in 2009 and Britney and I consider all of them to be close friends. On top of the people we met at Kentucky Lake, I have several other friends that I been lucky enough to meet through the site even though maybe not in person yet. I hate what this site has come to but I am still thankful for a place that we can all still stay in touch with each other.

Just so there's no misunderstanding... When I said "met" I meant face-to-face. I have certainly met many others through conversations here and they are no less considered than those I have actually laid eyes on. I've bought, sold, traded and argued with, or praised just about every one that is a member here at one time or another, and even cursed a lot that are no longer with us. My biggest lament is that the membership has been locked and has killed the ability for this site to grow like it should and remain "fresh". Most of us know why that is but I don't think things are going to change.

I would like to start by saying that I truely respect BRUCE!
And I hope everyone, including Bruce knows that!
My post was meant to give Bruce a hard time.

I've brought this subject up more than once so I think everyone knows my thoughts

Now for something very serious to me.

This is the very first forum I've EVER joined.
I don't join facebook or even forums pertaining to my business. Computers are a standard in my industry and most of my associates have personal websites with forums alot of times.
I don't join.
I don't even text on my phone.
But I joined BassFishing .com.
Very hesitantly but pretty vocal. sorry

At first before joining I hung around and listened to the thoughts of the members.
I even remember reading posts from Zooker.

Some may recall my struggles with you 'core guys' refering to one another by first name. Annoyed the crap out of me.
You guys explained that this site was different and one member kind of point blank told me,this how we do it here and this is why and don't ask me to change. Leave the site if you don't like it.
It really kind of angered me BUT I admired the fact that he came right out and said it. "Don't tell ME HOW TO ADDRESS MY friends!"

THEN SOMEONE SUGGESTED A LIST.
I think I remember who but WOW did that save me!
My list has 57 names.
40 of which I consider friends and don't have to check list because I now like them enough to remember their names.
And that includes everyone whos posted here and everyones list and OE.
I have hundreds of PMs from you anglers....MY FRIENDS.
This site has become an integral part of my ADDICTION.

I've learned, I've argued, I've messed up, I've gotten mad, but most of all......I've SMILED ALOT!
I think most of you know I find humor in almost anything I encounter.

But not this site going down!!!

My struggle is that I get the feeling that everyone seems afraid to contact Kevin or chat with him.
Isn't he a friend.
I consider him friend.
I can't beleive that if everyone sends him a concerned PM or email he won't respond.
Maybe HE NEEDS HIS FRIENDS too.
Maybe an email knowing his friends are worried about him would be nice.
Maybe his struggles could use a friends thoughts.

In ending I want to thank everyone for EVERYTHING you have done to make me a better PERSON as well as a better angler.

THANK YOU

Ooops... sorry that I picked open a scab, however, thanks for the story. Since I'm picking up that this is a pretty "tight knit" group, I'm wondering how much of an outsider I am...

I live on the bank of a popular resort chain of lakes in NW Iowa, fish for smallmouth and walleye whenever a few hours of comfortable weather and free time allow, fish strictly recreationally catch and release, and am only a few years short of retirement age. I've been a self-employed retail owner/operator my entire adult life and am currently grandfather to three pre-school girls.

Sometimes it's good to let a scab breath a little.
Your an absolute "insider"............the "insidest"

I predict that one day this site will dominate the online fishing forum meme

There are a lot of great people but you have obviously noticed that most the guys that have been here a while are getting a little worried bout the site. Without 'new blood' the site is goin into decline a bit.

Even I don't post as much, but I've been busy and will post a big update after this semester ends.

All in all, still a great group of guys. Now only if Kevin would open up membership.

Totally unintentional, Bruce. I figured that you were included since I chose to quote your post.

Hey Everyone lets give Bruce some reassurance that he's part of the Bassfishin.com Family!

Do you feel better now Bruce.

Now THAT'S FUNNY!

Joe, oddly enough, I couldn't remember who had started the first name club thread.

Surprised it was you!

I am honored to be on anyone's list. I have learned an awful lot from all of the guys on this site. I am sorry that current circumstances keep me from being able to get log on very often.
