Thumbs up Schooling Bass

Ive often seen the bass swim close the surface in tight groups of about 6. They go near the surface with thier mouths open and then swim together. I was wondering when they school, when do they split up? Also, is it easier to catch them when they are schooling, or when there in the cover without the school?

The hard part is finding the schooling bass, if you can, they ain't hard to catch.
A couple weeks ago I ended up near a school of bass feeding off of 2 underwater points running next to each other, every 5 minutes they'd start feeding on schooling minnows, the water would just boil with them jumping out, the bass were hitting the tops of the water 5-10 times in about 15 seconds. I just threw a white fluke in the middle of the rucus and started reeling, the bass would hit it every time. They were doing this for hours. Sometimes they would wait as long as 30 minutes between feedings. I've been out to the same lake numerous times sense without seeing this action. Come to think of it, it was a few hours before the hurricane came by.

Ok Well When Thier Schooling Chances Are That Their Traveling To Find Big
Food Source Mostly Shad, one Way U Can Tell Is When You Catch One Look
Inside Its Mouth Sometimes You Might See A Tail Of A Shad Or Crawfish Pincer, What Ever It Is Make Sure You Switch To Something That Looks Like The Creature That Was In Its Mouth. When U Find Big And I Mean Very Big Scools Of Shad And A Lot Of Bass Are Jumping, putt A Rat-l-trap On Or A Spinner. I Always Put A Black Rat-l-trap On So It Resembles A Shad
When Picking A Color For Spinner Its Very Different. Its All In The Blade Type, And Color. Try To Find One That Has A Blade Tyhat Resembles A Fish.for Instance If The Shad Are Small Try To Find A Blade That Has The Same Size As The Minnows. If Thier Bright And Shiny Use A Silver Blade, If Thier Brownish Use A Gold One, And Finnally If Thier Blackfind The Darkest
Blade U Can. Also Never USE A Bass Lookin Bait When Fishisg Around Shad
Alot Of Times Theyll Think Its A Bass And Go Away

Ive seen them schooling, but never eating while they are doing this. When i toss in a bait , they take some interest at it from a distance, but when they get close, they just swim away. It seems like the come close to check it out then dont like it, so they move on. Any ideas?

Fish Eat Because Of Two Reasons,1 Because Thier Hungry,2 Because Thier Mad.so When That Happens To Me I Get My Strike King Buzzbait And Cast ''near Them '' If Yu Cast To Close Your Going To Scare Them Away
Make Sure You Make Several Casts, each Time They Get Madder.SO EVENTUALLY
YOUR GOING TO CATCH ONE, AND ALWAYS REMEMBER WHEN FISHING SHAD,TO STRAIGHT BEHIND THEM ABOUT10 FT,BECAUSE IF YOU CAST RIGHT IN THE BIG PILE THEY ALL ARE GOIMG AWAY

About a month ago me and my dad were at the lake, and ran up on a school of bass, never seen it before but oh man was it beautiful!! The wierd thing was, they wouldnt hit much. I started throwing a white senko (can never find white TIKI sticks) and they tore it up, but when i ran out of those they wouldnt hit anything. Not a watermelon, black, or swirled worm. Even tried white cranks, buzzers, and spinnerbaits and got nothing. Probably the most incredible/bizzare thing i've ever seen on a lake

Well im sure a white Tiki would work, just never found one, the water was NASTY, very muddy so white may have been just about the only thing they could've picked up in such conditions (fishing the river channel of a local lake) but who knows

Sorry cant agree with the tiki. Schooling bass= ratltraps for me. Silver/black, silver/blue, to many to list. Do stay away from bass colors in this situation. I cast past the school and bring the trap in, or let it sink and come from the bottom through them.

flukes are VERY good at catching LARGE bass while schooling. Often times the large ones will swim under the school picking up any wounded baitfish that float their way down. A fluke will look just like it was hit by one of the smaller bass, trickle its way down to the big girl (hopefully the school won't take it first, but if so, hey its a fish) and if she's down there, she may very well take the bait.
