Default Topwater bassin

Topwater lures are one of my favorite types of lure to fish with. When I head out at dawn its what I usually reach for first. There is just something about fishing with one of the many different types topwater baits. I guess it might be the added audio and visual pleasure of watchin with anticipation at the lure in action, then seein the strike, along with the feel of the hook set that attracts me to these lures.

So far my favorite would have to be my Booyah Black 3/8 ounce buzz w/clacker, this one has caught me many of fish, especially during breezy conditions.

I'm curious to hear about your favorite topwater bait and what conditions have you learned that they are the most effective in.

I'm hooked (pun) on pop'rs. I've never caught a fish on a buzzbait in my life, but I've got a bunch off pop'rs. Something about the BLOORP sound really gets my blood flowing, like I know there's a fish below it, staring at it, waiting for one more twitch...

Frog! Any time I'm fishing shallow, scummy water from March through October. Buzzbaits are a close second.

Ah yeah, I've caught a few this year with a Zara Spook, those are cool.
I wonder who started the phrase "walking the dog", fun technique.

I could see where those frogs would produce...

A lures that I hav'nt heard of yet is the devilshorse baits, I hav'nt fished with them very much, they look like they would have there time and place.

I'm a Popr fan as well.

Use them early in the morning or if you can hit a mayfly hatch, watch out and have fun!!

My favorite topwater is probably a Baby Torpedo. I have caught more bass on my Torpedos than I could ever remember. I have my best luck early in the day or the evening hours. I prefer calmer water with overcast skys. However, there have been days where the sun was shining brightly and I was still able to get my share of strikes using the Torpedo in areas of shade. And there must be cover nearby.

after catching a 10 pounder on a zoom speed craw, I might be a little biased.

Hey Keith, I've been thinking about getting a couple of those Torpedos. I've heard others speak highly of them.

Well, so far the poprs have been spoken of most, and then the buzzbait and spooks are tied for second, frogs third.

I want to hear from the rest of ya, do any of you use the jitterbug .

I love topwaters, as they are one of the few baits that creates a visual strike... although they are not usually my main bait for the day, but a complimentary technique to other patterns. As for my favorites... poppers (Strike King Spit-N-King), Buzzbaits (Booyah), and Prop Baits(Rapala), along with Wake Baits (Mann's Waker, XCalibur Wake Bait). My favorite being frogs though... Best of the best being the Spro Bronzeye or Bronzeye Jr.

Great responses everybody! I have to say that it interesting to hear about those topwater lures that I'm not to familiar with. Sometimes I get so hung up on one or two of my favorites, I often miss out on what the bass are really wanting.

I hope there are more of ya that are willing to share.

I caught a 3 pound smallie today on a popr. Quite a feat for me considering it is the middle of November and water was 49 degrees! That was at 12:30 in the afternoon too. I saw some activity on the surface that looked like baitfish and casted there a couple times, worked it real slow, walk it, wait 30-60 seconds, walk it again and BAM!
So, use them any time of the day really, not just morning or night.
I like the Excaliber Zell pop the best, I've tried most all even the Ricos but the Zell pop catches the most fish.

Thanks! I'm no topwater expert or anything, it is just a real fun way to catch fish. The only other thing I suggest is the Rapala Knot since it lets the lure move freely and makes "walking the dog" a lot easier. Just make sure your loop is not too big or the front treble hook will get hung up in it.
