Merc 1500 150 HP w/ power trim
good day all, I was out today working my boat in for the season ( I have a 1978 Challenger Mark IV bass boat) with the above motor on it. It was running pretty good, seemed to spit a little but just thought it might have been due to bad gas. Well, she just died on me and wouldn't start, and when I went to trailer it, the trim wouldn't work. But then after I came in for the day from being out with a friend, the trim down worked but the trim up wouldn't. Does anyone have any ideas what would cause this? Where should I start looking?

Thanks...
I was afraid of that .... guess I need to just start chasing wires...
As far as switches, I wouldn't think that would be it b/c I have a Trim Switch at the front, console and rear of the boat for the trim, and all are acting the same... Will trim down but not up.. Any suggestions on tools to use? Any type of testers? or should I just check all my wires? Thank you, Brook |

does the trim motor work meaning you hear it working just no movement? Mine did the same thing friday, and was low on fluid, filled it up with 30w oil and works fine now.

no... actually trims down..
Butt will not trim up... so I am thinking electrical...

I have the same problem. My BUTT won't trim up either!!!

Once again I wanna say I would love to take that boat for a spin. Thats one of Buster Dobbs babiees he made. What you are having problems with is located under the hood. Look for the solenoids there's 2 of them. Look very similar to a ford solenoid. Have someone work the trim for ya and you can see which one is not working correctly. Simple way to know which is the up and which is the down is the Blue wireed sol is the up (blue for sky) and the green wired sol is the down (green for grass and down). As far as the motor sounds very much like you have electrical problems associated with the power packs and or stators. You said she sputtered some while running and then when shut down wouldnt fire up again corrwect. Your gonna have to get a multimeter and start doing ohm tests per the Merc manual to locate the bad one. I have pdl files on that motor if you need them.

Yup, thats it, it is sitting on top of the sq. reservoir, the fill hole is the small screw on the right, recessed from the top of the reservoir.
Maybe someone else can chime in and tell about the adjustment on the bottom front, you turn it by hand. Joe |

I used 10w-30 motor oil, i have seen in some of the manuals for the units they say you can use this also, and a boat mechanic told me this also.

Yes you can use that oil but please use it in an emergency. Try and get the real stuff from your local marina. It has special aditives that do things such as an anti foaming agent and additives to keep the seals soft so forth and on
