reflooring a boat
I have a 19ft Renken 1978, The floor is roten so we cut out the old floor and found that the foam along the runners was water logged, So it was removed also, The runners are also rotten but they are encased in fiberglass and that is what is holding them up. Do i remove them or not ? Any one have some good advice that i can use on this project. This is a father son project . THX

welcome to the show...
yep ya have to cut the stringers open -cut open the top only-remove the rotted wood and replace with fresh wood..get some fiberglass matting and resien. put new wood in then the glass mat over the top using 5200 expoy glue it down let it dry.. you may want to add new foam to the floor but personally it is a MAJOR pain in the but to do it.. the floor floation is really a sound deadner not really used in the floation of the boat... zooker

when you cut the tops off.. this is what you'll get .. hopefully something like this then like zook said lay some fresh wood and re-seal it.. only the first 1/2 inch of mine were rotten so they were a pain to remove welcome to the forum !!

Zooker you nailed it on the head as far as the flotation and the fix on the stringers. One thing ya missed buddy. He needs to make sure that where the stringers come in contact with the transom is not cracked out. Sometimes it is sometimes not. If it is that usually means he needs to take an indepth look at the transom. Cracked stringers at the rear of the boat usually means water intrusion into the transom and that means transom job. Major pain in the arse.

A Renken ... Is the motor good?
Not to rain on your project but up here in MD it would make a good vegetable garden.. My brother bought one and it was the worst boat I have ever worked on.. But have at it and make sure you replace all the wiring too. They use the cheapest wire they can find.. If it is an outboard then find a new hull to mount it on. Capt Mike
