Do you ever sharpen your hooks?
For the past year, I have noticed I have missed a lot of fish on the hookset when fishing plastic baits like worms and other texas-rigged baits. After closer inspection, I am beginning to doubt the sharpness of my hooks as they have sat in my moisture-laden tacklebox for years and although they show no signs of rust or damage, they do not pass the "thumbnail test", eventhough new hooks I buy out of the package haven't passed this test before.
So should I start sharpening my hooks? I have read in various articles that sharpening your own hooks can actually make them less sharp because it's highly inexact doing it by yourself and that you can never sharpen a point better than the manufacturer can. So should I go with my gut and sharpen, or wait till I see noticeable wear and tear on the hooks to replace/sharpen? Any advice on what I should do? Thanks for your replies. |

I sharpen them all the time, I may even sharpen them if I begin to notice that fish are not getting well hooked.

am with george here.. i use a hook it it breaks or i lose it. then replace it. i will file hooks every so often worm hooks spinnerbait hooks and crankbait hooks.. buy better quality of hooks helps a lot and lessens the fast dulling that some-eagle claw- hooks tend to do..

Always. I hardly ever throw anything without checking to make sure the hook is sharp, and if not I sharpen it. Learned that lesson the hard way many moons ago. A hook sharpener is one of if not the most important things to have in the tackle box IMO.

I sharpen them almost every trip out, the old hooks used to bend over, especially on a spinnerbait that had been hung up, and made it harder to resharpen. Thanks to todays technology the hooks are way sharper and a breeze to touch up with a hand file or battery powered sharpener

By reading your post you want to know whether or not you should sharpen your hooks because of missed hook ups. Yes, sharpen by all means. If you are not sure how to sharpen said hook, then practice on an old one and give it the fingernail test. Once you have mastered the sharpening, you'll never have to worry about it again.

This sounds like a stupid problem, but I know the good guys here won't criticize me...
I have a hook sharpener my dad gave me, yet whenever I try to sharpen a worm hook, I seem to make it even duller than it was before. All I do is angle it so that it's parallel to the point and slide it so you'd think it would get sharper... maybe my angle is off? |

Most probably that´s the reason, wrong angle and/or too many rubs.

Buy Gammy Superline hooks, or Owner hooks and you won't have that problem. But I will say I have sharpened a few hooks. But if one of the above gets dull(usually lose it before it gets dull) then I just tie on a new one. The Brand of hook makes a HUGE difference IMO, and the above are strong, and sharp everytime out of the package.

Boy, thanks so much for the great responses guys. I have never sharpened a hook before and I think I need to start doing so and soon. My problem is that I bought hooks in bulk a couple years back, so I have hundreds of worm hooks, trebles, etc, but quickly learned my lesson not to store the bulk hooks in your tacklebox as it gets damp real quick through the seasons.
So is there any recommendations on a hook sharpener that does the best job? I have seen in the past some different style sharpeners. Everything from your standard flat file, to sharpening stones, and even specialty electric hook sharpeners. So what is recommended? Thanks for your advice and knowledge. Glad I asked! |

For starters, go lightly when sharpening your hooks. Just a quick swipe can be all thats neccesary. I just use a flat square hook sharpener, and all my hooks stay sharp. I test each and every hook prior to using it. Even Lucky Craft hooks as well as the Owners, and Gamakastu hooks.
In the event that you hang up in a tree top, rocks etc.. That can dull your hooks. Don't use bent hooks, by bending the hooks back in place you may cause a weak spot. The only times I bend a hook back is when I'm practicing for a tournament. When I get home a new hook goes on.

I've got several of this type:
You can pick one up most places that carry tackle for about $5. Well worth the investment.

I don't sharpen. Uncle Sam (your tax money) pays me well enough, that I can "splurge" $2.89 for a pack of hooks.
