Default KVD's Square Bill Crank

Looking for some feedback on this crank. I've never used a square bill before, are there advantages to a square bill as opposed to the traditional? And what colors would best be applied in the north eastern region of our great country?

Square billed crankbaits are really good around shallow cover or structure. Like bama said, they are designed so they are able to deflect off of objects and allow you to fish them in areas where most other crankbaits would get hung up.

In general, square bills don't dive as deep as a round bill of the same size, but they deflect better off of cover. The points on the edge of the bill make the lure ricochet off aggressively.

Ahhh I see. That makes sense... The wider the bill the less chance of something cathing a hook.

Only because it deflects from objects.

When I first started using the RC baits I found that the 1.5 could be worked through the milfoil flats on the river in the spring time. Fishing with a friend we fished across a flat and I was catching numbers of bass, mostly small, while my friend only caught a few on plastics. He tried throwing other cranks but got hung up. He got frustrated and went out and bought a square bill just so he'd have one to fish the grass.

It does take a little practice to work the bait through the grass but it can be done and it does catch fish. Also if you do hang up the hooks on the RC rip out of the grass easily with a quick flick of the wrist. Another good thing about them is that they don't run deep so you can go in and retrieve your bait if you do hang up on wood or rock.

So are the KVD's just a RC knockoff?

Yup! Different action, and the bounce off stuff much better. While I'm not sure if I'd ever throw them in pads, they're great around other grasses, wood and rock.

Definitely not, they look different, and probably have different actions. Only similar thing I can tell is the they've both got square lips.

For whatever it's worth, these are currently on sale at Cabela's for $3.96, down from their usual $5.29 there. I didn't do any research to see what they sell for at other places.

Almost all colors are on back order, but here is the link for those who may want it.

Square Bills are good in shallow water and they tend to wobble more.

I have a couple of the square lip KVD cranks and they do as everyone above has stated. They have great action and seem to be a well built bait that should hold up well against bouncing off woody cover.

You guys who haven't gotten into the thaw yet, that KVD Square bill in botht he 1.5 and 2.5 was the bomb down here in north Georgia a couple of weeks ago when the water temps were warming through the low 50's (around 60 now). The slightly stained water with rocks and boulders on gradual sloping banks in the sunshine was the place to be for both big largemouths and spotted bass. we alternated between those and the LC Pointer 65 and 78 SP in the chartreuse shad color worked very slow and with a lot of pauses! They would kill both of those baits! The Sexy Shad on the KVD and Chartreuse Shad on the pointers. Last week the backs of pockets were working well with the square billed cranks in the crawfish Brown back and orange belly, didn't really matter which brand as long as it was that color.
Now we are finally getting back into the spinnerbaits and Super Flukes, Thank Goodness! My arms are tired from slinging those hard baits!

Smile great lure

Main thing is dont give with out changing your retrieve and color. I have a pond that is heavily fished. Ive put a lot of time into trying to figure it out. A bomber square A is a great lure for getting the bass to bite. I even caught a carp on one the other day. Try them slow, stop and let them float to the top, cank them fast. They are very versatile. Can you tell how much i like them yet. The action(wobble is excellent). Good luck with whatever you choose. My biggest problem with snags seems to be when my five year old hits me in the middle of a cast and i find a tree.
