Default spawning bass

hey guys went fishing at me local lake today and caught a few but it was pretty slow, for the last week i have been finding surface temps in the mid to high fourties but today i found them anywhere from 55 to 59. i was expecting to catch some bass on beds but basically nothing. am i wrong in thinking that at least the males should be clearing off the beds in this temp range? if so then when and what kind of banks should i look for first? thanks for your help guys!

A sandy bank about 3-5 feet deep, that depth can very, but the soft bottom makes for a nice bed

The surface temps can change pretty quickly with sunshine, doesn't mean that 3 feet down it's that temp though. I once had a lake change 8 degrees from the start of the day to the end of the day fishing I would think if they have been in the mid to upper forties lately it's still a little too soon for the bedding. Look to the first dropoffs, or points. Of course there are always fish shallow, just might not be a lot of them. When the temps are consistantly in the upper fifties, to lower sixties, start looking then, especially around the werewolf time.

I remember someone saying something a long time ago about physically hitting the bass with a rat-l-trap? does anyone remember this and care to elaborate?

It's no writen rule, but generally bass don't spawn until the water hits 63 to 65. Upper 50 you should see bass moving into stagging areas and males getting ready to build nests. Some bass may spawn early, or late. ON a given body of water bass will spawn at a different time because at different areas of the lake the water temp will be a little warmer or cooler.
