Default Retrieve

I learned a valuable lesson from KVD this weekend. About varying up your retrieves. He showed us the how and whys you do so in the fish tank during a talk he gave at BPS. Starting and stopping, and all the erratic movement that can cause bass to strike. He told us that bass or "lazy" predators looking to catch a easy meal, hunting the injured the weak baitfish. And that is how you need to present your lures to the bass. Make you bait have the most erratic presentation that it stands out from all other baitfish, and then hold on.

that strategy really pays dividends when using your rod to make lures like the fluke or chatterbait dart and resemble a dying shad, plus its fun to do and watch

I've been cashing checks lately on the wiggle wart...what I'm doing is giving it just enough to crash the rocks and then pausing it. I'm not starting it up or stopping it sharply like I would in the summertime . I'm just starting to reel again. Lot of times they will see that thing float up and swallow it.

I fished with am older guy about 20 years ago in Florida. He fished the occation tourneyment and was a decent fishermen. One thing he showed me was what KVD was showing you. This guy used a lot if jerks ad pauses of the rod while retrieving to make the bait dart out and act erratically. Using that technique boated a lot of bass for me over the years.

One of the 1st things I learned in Bass fishing 101 was that you needed to vary your retrieve by stop and goes, bounce pause & go, hit pause and go, pop & go. Tick the top of the weeds stop pop and go, jerk pause and go, twitch your rod tip right/left & up/down. And the list goes on. LM usually strike after the pause. Your presentation is different then the rest of the bait fish in the area. It looks like a easier meal. I've even tried having my lure NOT looking like the bait fish so the LM can more easily pick it out.
