Depends on the application. For most things, something like 6.1:1 or 6.3:1 is great...not too fast, not too slow. That's a good speed for worms, small to medium crankbaits, spinnerbaits, etc. Only thing that would go on a slower ratio would be the deep cranks, like DD22's or similar. For those, I'd say get a 5.3:1 or so, to give you more torque for cranking those big suckers. If you're looking at frogging, you might want to consider a 7.1:1 so you can yank them out of the gunk in a hurry and ski them back to the boat before they get wrapped around something.
Hope this helps.

Spinning; 5.3:1

Casting 6.4:1

Edit: was 4.4:1---now is 6.4:1.... my bad!

i agree 100%. i also like the 7.1:1 ration on jerkbaits at times because if a fish knocks slack in your line you need to be able to recover this slack really fast.

I like the 7.1:1 for top water as well. Getting the lure back into the boat to hit the spot again quickly. Additionally, since a lot of my top water is in the shallows and near structure, I want to get them away from debris quickly.

a 7.1:1 reel is more for speed throwing a crankbait and covering a lot of water in a hurry a 6.3:1 is a good happy medium, while the 5.3:1 is more for slower power retrieves .

I never worry about it for spinning because Ionly use 2 spinning reels. One for dropshot and one for other finesse/stuff too light for a baticaster.

For baitcasters, I usually go with a 6.3:1. I've never used a high speed (7.1:1) so I can't really say what I'd use it for.

7.1:1 for pitching jigs and soft plastics in heavy cover so that i can get'em out quick before they can take me into the trash. i like to use a 6.3:1 for spinnerbaits and a 5.3:1 or slower for cranks just because i will end up burning the water up if i use faster reels for cranks.

comparing gear ratios between spinningnand casting reels is an apples to oranges connection. a 6.0:1 shimano symetre (spinning) has a recovery line rate of 31" while a 7.x:1 Curado E recovers 30" Even then the symetre has a "lower" gear ratio, it recovers more line than a "burner" curado.

Casting: 7.0:1 if I need to move things fast
6.x: for other casting

Spinning: Well, I have a symetre so I guess its 6.0:1.
