Organizing My Tackle Today
I havnt been in bass mode sence September and sence my hunting season is over I am getting the drive again! I havnt gone thru my tackle in a while so I think I am goin to do that today. I got a lot of bass stuff for X-mas and need to go thru that. I need to spool my new rod and reel today too. I think I'll be busy for some of the day

how do you spool your line? i think im doing something wrong... i put the spool on one of those toilet things that hold toilet paper. i push a small pencil thru it, and just reel. i think im getting line twist in it... and what does line twist do, anyways?

Crankybait-what kind of reel? A spinning reel is spooled differently than a baitcaster.

Cranky, you are spooling up like you should with a baitcaster, not a spinning reel. To fill the spinning reel set the spool on the ground with the label up and wind it on.
However: I've found that regardless of how you spool the line on there will be some twist using a spinning reel. So, here is a fix for it. If you have a boat, when you are running let the line trail behind the boat with nothing tied to it ans wind it back on when you get where you are going to fish. If you don't have a boat, take the rod outside, open the bail, grab the end of the line with nothing tied to it, and start walking. When you get to the end, wind the line back on pulling it through your fingers to keep it tight on the reel. As the line pulls through your fingers it will untwist.

rebasser- no i dont have a boat. if i cant afford a baitcastin reel, there is no way id have a boat lol. and for teh backyard thing... do you mean empty the whole spool out while walking? my parents own 3/4 an acre, and i have a decent size backyard... but that would take a tad long, wouldnt it? and when i open the bail to take out line, it gets all twisted... should i just set the drag to the lowest? also, what does line twist do anyways?

i dont think line twist affects a spinning reel as much as a baitcaster, on a baitcaster line twist can cause some nasty backlashes.

oh damnit... im really tryin hard not givin up on gettin a baitcaster. with the careless way i fish... and how the hell do you put a swiviel on to attach a lure??!! swivels dont open... just two tiny holes. i tie one end to the end of my line. now how do i get my lure on? im tempted to just use a swivel snap no matter what lure im fishing

Line twist on a baitcaster doesnt matter that much...not good obviusly, but it's doesnt ruin everything.
With line twist on a spinning reel, the line is just going to start "looping" all over the place. If you have too much of it, it's almost impossible to go 5 casts without getting a tangle. You can't cast near as far with a lot of line twist either |

never had any loopy stuff on my spinning reel... and consider that before some guy laughed at me, i used to fish only spinners with a snap about the size of the spinner itself

Regarding swivels-I don't use them except on a Carolina rig and a floating worm, and use barrel swivels for those. I tie directly to the line using a Palomar knot. Palomar knot: http://www.fish4fun.com/palomarknot.htm

hmm, yeah ive learned the palomar knot. bassmaster 228 and bassbuster from bdo reccomended it. but are you sure the uni isnt stronger? plus, dont you use swivels on spinners and spinnerbaits? and whats a barrel swivel? arent the ball bearing kinds supposed to be the best?

Barral swivel:
The only time I use ball bearing swivels is holding the main blade on a spinnerbait when I make my own. Like I said, the only time a swivel is tied on my line is with a C-rig or a floating worm. If you like a uni knot by all means use it-use what works for you, not someone else.

oh, ok then. you sure? seems too easy, i dont know why theyd even have other knots... does this also work on moving lure with split rings? i think its only supposed to be for terminal tackle

a palomar knot is the best knot there is for tying ANY lure or terminal takle to the line....100% knot strength....other knots are for specialty situations...dont worry about those right now

No, when tied correctly the Palomar Knot has been shown to retain 96.9% to 99.6% of the lines strength. Actually it's supposed to something like that anyway the next best is improved cinch knot at like 92% and that is a very very difficult to achieve 92%. It really doesn't matter though what the percentages are the only thing you need to remember is the Palomar by far is the strongest knot (when tied properly). If you don't tie the knot PROPERLY, it doesn't really matter what knot you use.

theres a roper way? i thought you just make a doubled line, push it thru the eye, granny knot, go around the lure, and tighten
