Question Jigs for punching mats?

I caught my fist bass on a jig a while ago, it was a 1/2 strike king KVD swimming jig. I was having a really hard punching the mats, and when I did, they never hit bottom and I just came up with weeds.... I know for a fact that these where not fish garbing it on the fall because I set the hook when this happened..... and got weeds! What are some very weedless jigs, good for punching mats, and what weight? It'll be great if anyone could advise any jigs!

~Good luck, and good fishin!

Thanks,

talk to smitty, he has a jig that i think is designed to do that. he sent me one and i haven't had a chance to use it much and we don't have much grass here anyways.

also we are working with a prostaff member at designing a flipping jig that will work around grass but we probably won't offer it in heavy enough sizes to be used as a punch jig.

I think you just need something heavier. I like BOOYAH Boo jigs. They come in 1 and 1.25oz too.

Also, consider using a soft plastic bait, like a 4" bever bait with a 1/2 oz. tungstin weight pegged to the line. I find that penetrates heavy matts of weeds easier than a jig.

Ya, my local gander has some, it comes with I think it comes with 6 plastics rather than 2 though! I'll has to get some of those along some heavy flippin' jigs, I think they also might have the big jigs TR posted!

Also when you're punching mats, is it good to have brighter colors so it's easier for bass to see in the mats? Or should I just stick with the Okee craw colors, and the greener colors?

p.s. - wouldn't it be great if rage tail made some plastics for that!

Thanks again guys!

Send me a PM or a call if you want more info. I've got a few 1oz and 1.5 oz left. Sold out of one custom color skirt already.
Unfortunately my new web pages are finished but can't get them up. Technical troubles.

Ditto. PnJ turned me on to these a few years back. Super jig.

I checked these out a while back and wanted to add them to my product line. I contacted the company and they put me in touch with the local distributor (a good friend of mine). He quoted me a price that was $1 per jig over their price sheet which they sent me . That meant that I'd have to sell the bait $1 over retail to make a profit . He called them back and tried to work something out and they wouldn't budge. They blamed the price increase on the cost of lead .

I'm not saying that they don't work or aren't good jigs just that the management has issues.
