any tips on making lures dive?

ok guys, got me a rotary tool and some plexiglass. im working on bassintxladys lure, just cut out the bill which i think is pretty good, but can any of you give me some general info on the diving bills and stuff? i know the more paralell to the bait, the longer the dive, and the wider the lip the more wobble. i also know that the further from the bait the line tie, the shorter the dive. any other tips on like how to shape em or make perfect shaped ones or just making them in general? i just use a template i found somewhere, trace it with a permanent marker, and use the cut-off wheels with my rotary tool to cut out the lip, then i sand it. should i also deburr it? or would the sanding be enough? i also like to sand the edge of the lip further from the bait to make it narrower. i see that on all of my lures, so i decided id do it. im now officially broke, so all ive got now is my deal with dad to fall abck on for lures for the rest of the year. i got the warranty with the st.croix rod anyways, so im good on rods for the year, and ill have 2 usuable reels. not too bad. maybe if i get good enough, i can sell there handmade lures for a lil cash, but i doubt that.

Well, I'll tell you this, the slimmer the bill, the tighter and faster the wobble. The fatter the bill, the wider and slower the wobble. Also, the Bass Resource website has some excelent information on lure creation. Just follow the links.

what are the points of different wobbles anyways? does it matter much? which is better? oh and i read that article, its on tons of different sites. but thanks anyways. tons of articles helped a lot, i wouldnve never thought of using two ahlves to make a bait...

The difference in the wobble often can be the difference between 1 or 2 fish, or a winning limit of fish. If bass are sluggish, they're not going to chase a little minnow swimming his heart out. A wider, slower wobble will outpreform the slimmer, faster wobble in these conditions. Likewise, when the water is warmer and clear, you'll catch more fish with the reaction strike a faster tight wobbling crankbait offers.

ok. then what about lipless cranks? how do you determine the wobble of those?

i buy dollar store lures and take the diving lips of them and put it on my homemade lures

there arent lures at the dollar stores here. and why waste a perfectly good lure? plus, if you want to buy em, get em at jannsnetcraft.com if you buy a lure just for the bill, you waste a lot. a sheet of plexiglass is like 5 bucks

the head of a lipless crankbait is the "bill". Some have divots, some are flat and square, they are a tight wobbling bait..from Rat-L-Traps to LV's to Cordells, thats what the head is designed for them to do.

I would do a whole lot of researching and studying before I go cutting up materials. Theres a lot to making a crankbait that works well.

Also keep in mind that the angle that you attach the bill will cause the crank to dive to differnent depths.

Plexiglass will shatter or crack when you throw that in cold water. That is tackleunderground.com's biggest no no on making lipped cranks.

yeah, ive done about 3 months of research before actually starting. i know, the angle matters too. i took a page of tips from some other site, and so i know the bills i make are shaped right. chris, i know itll shatter in cold water but i couldnt afford lexan. im broke

You could get a protractor (measures angles) and compare what the bill looks like (what angle to the body) on other well known crankbaits,
and then make the necessary cut into your lure body to insert the bill...
You can get one from geometry students or at a student bookstore.

i buy the lures at the dollar store for a quarter take off the lip and hooks ans hard ware and throw a way the rest you cant buy all those peices for that much

25 cent lures? wow!!! and i wasnt really into the metal lips, something tol;d me that it would deter fish. id rather clear. JB, thanks for the tip, im sure my parents wont hesitate to buying me a protractor... until they figure out im not using it for the STAs lol!
