I call B.S., NO fisherman worries about a litte rain.
That's why they make GORETEX.
Whimp.
Now if you said LIGHTNING delay, I could understand that and am willing to give you an opportunity to change your story.

Call me STUPID because I go fishing and fish in rain, sleet, snow, thunder and lightning. A friend of mine named Vaun Cummings and I launched about 3 weeks ago, after driving 4 hours in the lightning storm, on North Barkley Lake and caught 90 Largemouth off this one hump in 5 hours. I had been hammering fish on this hump for 3 straight trips and knew they were still there. Lightning struck a couple of times close enough that the hair stood up on my neck. From a numbers standpoint, the best day fishing the FNF at Dale my buddy and I had 37 on the fly and when we took out there was 5 inches of snow in the boat. The year John Robertson and I won the Billy Westmoreland Tourney, it was 22 degrees and 2 inches of snow in the boat on Day 1 and sleeting on Day 2 and I drove 21 miles to our first spot. My Fish Headz mask fogged up as we were idling thru the livewell check so it was a cold ride on the face both mornings

I have to take advantage and call you stupid on one count - the lightning causing the hair to stand up on your neck. I'm sorry, but there just isn't any other way to say it. That you had someone in the boat with you and subjected them to the danger is beyond my comprehension wheter they were willing or not - it was your boat (I'm assuming) and therefore your responsibility for your friends safety. I'm happy you're here (as well as your friend) today to relate the story and not pushing up daisys.

Ditto. Fishing with lightning anywhere in the area is beyond stupid as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, there is no excuse for that. We have all probably stayed a little longer than we should have when I thunderstorm moved in on us. But to launch a boat and head out into a lightning storm is stupid.

Obituary

Mr Elwood Lumpkins and an unnamed associate met with a tragic death yesterday while fishing on Dale Hollow Lake. Initial reports indicate the two were notorious for using poor judgement. This fatal incident occured while Mr Lumpkins and his companion were fishing in a severe lightening storm and waving 8' fiberglass rods high in the air.

Man, talk about an eerie coincidence....a man was killed by lightening today on Okeechobee....

http://www.wired2fish.com/Rogue-Ligh...or-WhatsUp6822

But what got me a little choked up was in the second-to-last paragraph.....

".....one after another every single state federation President in the southern division, every single angler, and even the angler who won the Ranger Cup bonus money, EVERYONE who came up on stage pledged to donate their entire prize checks, every single dollar, to Lorenzo’s family’s needs."

Hats off to those people. That's a great thing to do.

My partner and his dad were fishing a big tournament with over 200 boat on Grand lake here in Oklahoma and they sent them out right before a major thunderstorm got there, and he said they had lightening strikes all around them. I couldn't believe they would send out boaters in the kind of weather instead of delaying it for 2 hours... The wind, cold, and rain are one thing but when your messing with lightening or any type of electricity it's always best to be cautious.

That's a sad story good to see everyone come together to help his family though.

I read about that the other day. I am pretty sure it happened over the weekend, and I agree it is a very sad situation.

I am pretty sure that you are talking about the Nichols Trail. I agree that at first sending those guys out into weather like that sounds like a bad idea and I am not saying it was the best decision they could have made but they really didn't have a better decision either. Those tournaments draw over 300 boats and guys launch from all over the lake to avoid the traffic at Martins Landing. They don't have the means to provide shelter for 600+ anglers so if they held them there they all would just be sitting ducks while they are floating in Echo Bay waiting for the storm to pass. At least by sending them out via takeoff they all had the chance to run for whatever shelter they could find even if it was just hiding under a dock.

Yeah thats true I can't remember the situation exactly cause it was back in April, but I think I remember some people complaining the night before the tournament that they weren't going to delay it and push back the weigh in. Either way the tournament director has a ton of responsibility and I'm sure he spent a lot of time coming to his decision.

I also saw that. It gave me cold chills.

Lightning is one of the few things in this world that is uglier than I am. It's fast and doesn't care who it plays with. So we stay off the water if there is even a chance.

Very glad to see your to a point where you can get back out with your boat Don. I've been in Nebraska and just got back home last night, so catching up on posts I've missed. I agree with your feelings about heading out in the rain. If it looks like a hard rain, I simply stay home. But if it's a light rain, I'll go usually. But anything close to a thunderstorm, I'm stayintg home!

In a follow up to the tragic death of Elwood Lumpkins and Mr Vaun Cummins, we must print a small retraction to the initial obituary. It was Barkley Lake, they had driven 5 hours with it raining buckets, Mr Lumpkins knew EXACTLY where a school of fish were on this certain hump and after catching 90 by noon, they both agreed it was one heck of a way to go. Add in the fact that not one Jet Ski or Party Barge was within 50 miles of them was icing on the cake

I would also like to mention the fact that many of those attending the funeral were heard saying, "That Mr Lumpkins sure had some Big Cojones."
