Default Todays outting 5-22-12

It's been 4 weeks since I was on the water due to inclemant weather. Today I was bound and determined to go regardless of the weather, barring a thunderstorm of course. Once again a cold front dominated the weekend. Air temp was 36 degrees when I got to the lake with winds around 20 mph increasing as the day wore on. Still I managed to land about a dozen, most of which were small dinks. I did land a decent 3.4 pounder, second photo, after a couple hours, and near the end of the day I landed this 5.4 pounder, first photo. I caught one on a spinnerbait, one on a jig, and the rest were caught on a Lucky Craft Rick Clunn 2.5 model in American Shad. I knew when I bought that lure this spring that it was going to be a good one! All of the fish were caught in the 8-12 foot range over and through weedbeds, and around laydowns extending from shore, but only near deep water. Banging that crankbait off submerged branches in the laydowns was an especially hot pattern. I started off pounding piers which is where I had found the majority of bass this season, but couldn't so much as get a strike. The cold weather has pushed the bass back into mid depths. I found it odd that I only caught one bass on a jig which had been one of my best producers untill today. Also I had zero strikes on a lipless crank and suspending jerkbaits. I am possitive, had the wind not been so strong, I could have worked even deeper weedbeds and scored with those baits, but white caps and strong winds simply blew you away from your cast before you could even retrieve the bait in those areas. So all in all, as cold as it was, it was, for the most part, an enjoyable outting.

Way to go, k-dog! Good to see you get rewarded for getting out there on such a cold & windy day.

P.S. -- I wish it was already 5-22 instead of only 4-22!

Great fish. I really like the RC's. Caught some nice bass on them last year.

Some of us live in the past, some in the present, but only keithdog lives in the future.

Good fish though, I feel like some editing may be in your future, errrrr, past. Good job braving the weather to fish though, usually worth it.
