Unhappy Striped Bass on the Lower Chattahoochee

Alright guys, I need some dire help.

I live in Columbus, GA where there is great access to the Chattahoochee river. I've done the catfishing but now I have been told that there is some decent striped bass fishing on the river. (Around 10 to 30 pounds)

I was told that 1/4 oz. to 1/2 oz. crappie jigs with a 3 inch grub in the color of either yellow, white, or chartreuse will work. But, I went out and couldn't get anything to take a bite or even a nibble. I have fished the entire water column with the jigs both fast and slow. I have tried a straight retrieve and a jerky retrieve to make the crappie jig bounce.

I am fishing from shore due to the fact that I dont have a boat. The water is very dirty in the middle but gets a little clearer as the water level decreases.

Now guys, I am dying to get a fish. It has been about three months since I have gotten a fish and I go fishing regularly. I am doing something wrong but I am not going to give up. PLEASE HELP!

try cut bait or live bait just like you would for catfish.

Would there be any other rigging style?

Your definately using the right tackle. A white grub or swimtail on a red jig is the best weapon. Usually we fish either around rocks, bridges or piers. If you cant find rocky structure, try areas where fast water and still water meet.

Not sure about GA, but here in southern VA, there is a few more months till we start fishing for striper. I'm sure you could fish for them all year around, but most wait for the fall or when the weather gets cold.

As far as live bait, I've fished with guys that would take a crab and break it in half and throw it out. If your good with cast nets you can get yourself finger mullet or menhaden. Eels are good too.

there is only ONE live bait for salt run rock fish-stripers-and is eels or rock candy..as they are known here..

check local laws..

Here in Delaware I like to use live spot or bunker cut in 3 in chunks. I also like to use the 1/2 oz red jig head with the white grub like you said. I fish for them all the time but they have to be 28'' to keep around here.
Good luck at the river
