Megabass Rods
I finally went into the local American Legacy shop, and I was pretty much stunned. I knew there were expensive items in there, but I didn't know the half of it. I'm not knocking these manufacturers, mind you...it all looks like really well-made gear. But seriously...who uses a $600 rod? And just how much better is it than a $300 rod? How many more fish will it put in the boat over its life than six $100 rods? I'm not knocking the super-wealthy either, but it seems I would have to be a gazillionaire before I would even think about buying something like that. Even then, I think I would see it as a waste. It's like bass fishing has become a boutique pastime.
On the other hand...I saw some very expensive, AMAZING looking crankbaits. Total works of art. Now I can see how you could argue that the fish could see the difference, right or wrong, but I seriously doubt if the bass knows or cares if your rod has a flip-flop red prismatic finish with a rare Indonesian curly figured cork handle. I'm glad we have a lot of tackle choices these days, but man...this is ridiculous.

Brice, if you have ever gone to tackletour.com and watched some of their videos and seen some of their reviews you will see some megabass stuff. they always get amazing reviews in everything but pirce. I agree with the ridiculousness of the prices though. They (megabass) have a new reel out called the monoblock which runs like 950! :O

I got an email last week about a bunch of Megabass rods that were 20% off, I wonder why... I have been known to buy a lot of tackle myself, but I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy a rod that is so expensive. The way I see it money would be better spent getting a full custom rod made for less than half of that.

I dont know how like companys with SUPER expensive stuff keep the line of the expensive stuff going(like the Daiwa Steez). when I went fishing with Mike Iaconelli he let me fish with a Steez setup, it was super light and smooth but it wasnt that BIG of a difference than fishing with my fenwick Elite Tech&Abu Garcia reel. and when is the last time you have seen a normal guy with a $800+set up for 1 rod and reel?

Who are you to demand pictures? This isn't a grand jury inquiry.

Now would be the proper time to apologize. This is not a request.

On tackle tour, they call this stuff Enthusiast tackle. It's like the 500, 600, 700 dollar reels they import from Japan. I call it a waste of money. If I had 600 bucks, it would probably go to two rods AND two reels, not one rod or one reel.

If you would like to know of our craftmanship ask Kevin he has one of our tournament series rods I am sure he would give you an honest answer. Not sure what you mean by nothing wasted, we build our rods with great ballance and feel. If you need to know more about our rods you can speak with some of our customers or by looking at their testimonials on our site.

Oh, I didn't mean anything negative about Tigers, Tim. I haven't ever even held one in my grubby paws. I was mostly referring to high-end Megabass, Diawa, etc. where to me, it seemed they spent as much on fancy gold trim and paint job as to the performance of it. Like I said, I might in the future want a real fancy custom rod for the total package, but the St. Croix's I am using now are kind of my workhorses...nothing extra fancy, just performance.
I have looked at your prices, and they fall inbetween what I'm using and the "boutique" stuff. Very reasonable from what I've seen. When I'm ready, I'm sure you'll hear from me.

When I build a rod, I tend not to add a bunch of frills either. The last one I built was the first I've done with a split grip, but that was about it.
Oh, and Tim, who manufactures your rod blanks? BB
