Default Crankbait Line

Got a question for yall on your personal opinion. :

I received a new baitcasting setup for christmas, and was wondering what lb. of line that you throw with lipped crankbaits? I currently have:
12 and 14 lb. Trilene XT
17 lb. Stren
12 lb. Cajun Red
or
20lb. power pro braid? What would be my best bet here? Thanks!

cajun red 12 pound. it is thinner than all the others will give you at least 1 foot more over trilene.

Yah, Cajun is a high quality line. I really dont like Trilene XL, XT is decent, Big Game is awesome. I now have switched to Cabelas Brand.

why i do all the time..... gains me about 3 feet over 12 pound test..

kicker
bull i have yet to backlash the 8 pound test to inoperable state last year.or for that matter last 3 years since i have been using the 8 pound line.. i have thrown it in some VERY windy conditions with no problem. it gets loops in it on short stubby cast but a long cast out the back of the boat clears them..

If you do go with powerpro you would want to use about 56lb test at least.

Wink Bait cast line

10 lb Stren flouocarbon. It's got enough strength to handle big bass and allows the bait to perform naturally. This line is all that I use. Great line, been using it for years.

10 lb. flurocarbon may be a little too thin if you haven't had much experience with a baitcasting reel. Larger diameter lines are easier to pick out. Shy away from braided lines if you are a beginner with the baitcaster.

i wouldn't use fluro or braid on a setup used soley for crankbaits. mono has the stretch you need for crankin.

it is by far. when you are fishing with a braid or fluro (lines with no or little stretch) and the fish jumps and squirms in mid air, a mono will simply absorb and contract keeping the fish hooked. A braid on the other hand won't give therefore will likely pull the hook from the fishes mouth.

The simple answer would be stick with mono. You also have to pay attention to the cover and perhaps bottom content you're fishing. I wouldn't fish less than 10 lb test unless I was throwing certain balsa wood baits. For open water or cranking deep structure I fish 10 primarily. On weedy flats I adjust to fish 12. Around wood, docks and rip rap I fish 14 but I consistently no matter what the application still maintain a certain level of contact with the cover that's present.

I've not used braid with crankbaits before because I'm wary of water absorbtion and don't want to pull hooks out when bit. That said, I have used flurocarbon line (which is virtually no stretch as well) to throw lipless cranks. These were long casts on flats however and I wanted no stretch to rip it out of the weeds after contact. Keep in mind I was also burning the bait along to keep it up. Flurocarbon sinks.

I knew I shouldn't have read this post LOL. I say use the Powerpro, with a GOOD, flexible rod. It helps absorb the shocks, with the no stretch line. I used to be just like a lot of the other here, with "you need the mono for the stretch", but a good rod resolves that issue. The fact is you have to play a crankbait hooked fish more period. They have a tendancy to be able to throw those more than any other bait. Keep your rod tip down in the water, and let the rod and drag fight the really big ones. This is just my opinion of course and what works for me. Many others use different techniques and equipment. All will work if you use them properly.

LR the weight of the lure helps the fish throw it.
What rod do you use for Cranks?
I am looking for something, but I'm not sure what.
I use power pro on my spinners but I'm looking for a rod for cranks

A slow action rod does give when a big fish hits. Fiberglass rods help but the sensitivity is not as good as with graphite. The best bet is to go with a composite rod. These rods are made from fiberglass with graphite mixed.
BPS has a "Crankin Stick" which has these qualities.

Flourocarbon is very low if any stretch. A flourcarbon leader will sink better, but the line diameter is larger for the same strength. As for what Rod I use, it's a St Croix Crankbait Rod 6'6 Med with a Moderate action. Not sure how much it costs, but it is less than $90. I don't go fishing without it. I leave a lot more exspensive rods at home before I leave that one. I also keep my drag fairly loose.
