must tell you guys, I love jigs, have boxes of the stuff and all the trailers and pigs imaginable. Jigs just makes sense to me.

but, you know there is a but. I just dont get any fish on the stuff!! winter - zip summer - blank
fall - one wussie bass and one decent bass in the spawn

thats all my jig bass for the year!

luckily I have some flukes as well ;D

I've never used jigs, its just not my confidence lure. I'll stick with jerkbaits and other plastics.

Guys, I threw jigs for literally years before I caught one on a jig-I'm talking a jig-n-pig here, not a lead head with a grub-caught a bunch on those. Â*It's my go-to bait for cold water and for wood. Â*With one exception every bass I have caught on a jig-n-pig came 1) Â*as the lure was falling and 2) in and around wood-brushpile, flooded tree, etc. Â*I even caught a 20lb flathead out of a flooded tree on a jig-n-pig earlier this year. Â*It wasn't until the last couple of years that I started to get consistent with a jig. Â*Once you get that first bass you will get confidence in them and catch more fish on them. Â*Keep chunking, fellas-you WILL eventually get bit. Â*Right, Lizards ?

It's tough for me you read the threads on not being able to catch jig fish. I rely on a jig when all else fails. If I had only one bait to use out of all I have, it would be a jig. Black and blue or a craw pattern with trailers to match.

Reb, bassguy,

I to learned to fish a jig this year and it's fast becoming one of my favorites.

Reb,

I think you hit on one important aspect of jig fishing and that's the fall. More hits and fish are caught while the jig is falling than any other time. You have to be paying very close attention once it hits the water. I would bet that the amatuer angler misses more strikes because:

a. they never detect the bite on the fall

b. They detect the hit but think it's fished like a soft plastic and wait for the second hit to set the hook. Unfortunately, all there doing there is setting the hook after the fish is spitting the jig back out.

Remember, first tick is fish sucking it in, 2nd tick is him spitting it out and it's too late.

Make sure that you're fishing were the fish are.
Try and keep your trolling motor on low.
Allow the lure to enter as quietly as possible. Often times a fish is right were you put your bait.

I hear it's all in the presentation. Just pick it up and lower it in every little hole in wooded areas, and up next to trees. I am working on my confidence with one.

Just posted on your little demo thread. Thanks again. Skeeter you just answered my question, with a jig a bass will usually just inhale it then spit, do bass ever just blow up on one during the fall or when it's being popped on the bottom?

dont give up on fishing a jig. i dont because ive never been taught how but like when im fishing a worm, if i cast it to the perfect spot then i am almost positive that im going to get a fish do that with a jig when u cast it to a great spot then think that you are going to get a fish even if u dont get a fish this will help u fish a jig more then u will start getting bites u have to have confidence it will help u fish a jig more

i'm guesing this has to be done off a boat.

is there any acceptable way to fish a jig off the banks of a lank or pond?

i dont have a boat for a little while longer.

Flfireman,

I'm speaking with the little experience I've got with jig fishing. I just started this past spring/summer but have used this method quite heavily this year.

They really don't blow-up on them but I've have seen the times when they hit it almost instantaniously as it hits the water. You really have to be paying attention the entire time your jig fishing.
