Default Deep Hooked Fish

I found this on one of the other forums I go to at Walleye Central. It is pretty informative.

good article,,i've always cut the hook and try to get the pieces out if they're easy to remove, otherwise leave the piece(s)in.the important thing is to make it easy for the hook to come out,but get the fish back in the water ASAP.

I have been wondering about this lately. I always cut off barbs. I also carry forceps and wirecutters. If you clamp the forceps as far into the bend as possible and cut off as much shank as you can, you can pull a barbless hook right out of the gut by rotating the forceps. Anybody else have tips?

Oh yeah....I also put a bigger bend in the hook so that it has a wider profile. A wider profile means it is less likely to go all the way down. A wider profile also means that the barbless point is less likely to come out. I'm not a pro...I just know what works for me.

I don't know if i would use one but I saw on Bass pro shops.com they have self releasing hooks. It's pretty crazy how they work.
