Walking the dog is a topwater technique, usually thought of when talking about the Zara Spook.

What you do is try to get the bait to "walk" back to you in a zig zag path. First the front of the bait points left then right, then back again. You do this by giving a quick jerk on the line, with the rod tip pointed down. It also helps to have a tight knot so it doesn't slip up around in the eye of the bait. We used to file a notch in the eyelet, but I think the newer spooks come with one already cut in them, but I may be wrong.

I usually work the bait in a one, two, three four...stop... one, two, three..stop..and so on. How long you stop is open for experiment. Another way to do it, especially when the fish are active is to just keep the bait coming. one, two, three, pause.. one, two, three, pause.

The key is in the wrist action, and like a lot of other things just takes practice, practice, practice.

I forgot to mention. Walking the dog invented carpel tunnel syndrom long before computer keyboards discovered it. It is hard on your wrist when done properly.

I AINT NO YANKEE.LOL
I am proud to be from the sonny ole south, ya'll.

A yankee is anyone north of the mason dixon line.
And i still don't know why there is a team called the yankees.

And walking the dawg is best achieved with some slack in the line, as it causes a sharper jerk. Also, it is nessecary to turn the reel some with each jerk. A difficult, but not impossible teqhnich to learn .It took awhile for me to get it right.

If you search the internet, you can find pics and instructions on how to do it.

It is ridiculously succesful if you learn to do it right.

Rob, the rest of these guys covered walking the dog pretty well. If you throw a Zara Spook or similar bait out and use short jerks of the rod tip it will "walk" the bait-just give it a try and you will be able to see what we mean. It is not difficult-just takes a little practice.

If you get on a good top water bite with the Spook walkin' the dog, you won't forget it. Sometime a big fish will try to trash the bait. Some unbelievable strikes!!
