Thanks to a plug knocker today I saved myself several lost crankbaits and as a result the replacement costs of the cranks. If you throw crankbaits I highly recommend either buying or making yourself one. I made mine out of a surf sinker:



I cut off 3 ot the tines, bent one like a hairpin to put over the line, and in the loop in the end attached a swivel for a line to an old reel so I can reel it back in and a snap swivel to clip over the line, then just drop it down to the bait and bang it free. Here is the finished setup:

Ever lose a crankbait because you get it snagged? I got hung up 4 times today and did not lose a bait. Put the hairpin bend over the line, attached the snap swivel to the line, Dropped it down to the hung up crankbait and the weight knocked the plug loose, so I got it back instead of a broken line. Hence the name, plug knocker-it knocks hung up baits loose so you get them back. If I had lost those 4 baits I would have been out at least $25 bucks to replace them. Instead they are still in the boat.

i use a telesopic handle on mine i can also remove a lure from a tree and or power line.

What size weight do ya use, and how do you put it on your line?

Looks real nice. How can I make one? What are the 3 or 4 wires coming out of the weight besides the one that hooks to the line for?

Hula, that particular one is a 6 oz. I made one with a smaller weight but it wasn't heavy enough. Here is how it works:



Lonestar, it is a surf sinker for salt water applications-the tines sticking out are designed to bury in the sand and keep a bait anchored in place.

Hey Zook if I had that handle I could have picked a few lures out of the trees around the lake, If I could save 25$ and pick up another 25$ in lost lures Im tech getting paid to fish........?

i have reclaimed over a 100 crank lures say at 5 bills each not bad on a 30 dollar retriver.

One of those pole's that Zook mentioned is alot better when using 8 or 10 lb test line.
The kind that I've got is a triangle with a weight attached. This thing may cause your light line to break.
You may want to get some basscasting weights 3/4 and up. Add some open snaps and when you get hung up, just send one down your line. Works without fraying up the line.
If one doesn't work, then send another. If that doesn't work then use a pole with a spring on the end.
If that doen't work then get your big heavy lure retriever and try to get your bait before the line gives way.
