Default NEED power trim help!

Hey folks,

I have a 1980 80hp merc with power trim. I trimmed up to fish some flats yesterday, and cannot get the trim to lower. Had to use the trolling motor to get back (CRAP). any ideas?

Sounds like one of your tilt/trim switches have gone bad. Not being familiar with that engine I don't have a clue where they are located, but that would be my guess.

If you change one I'd change both just to be on the safe side.

Check the fuse, don't know how many of those I blew out on my runabout, easy fix, just annoying.

check the fuse 1st,but you're probably looking at a solenoid...you can use the manual release to get it down.
does it make noise when you try to lower it?..or just nothing?

Sorry I forgot to mention, yes it does make noise, it just wont lower or raise. any idea how to manually release them short of taking the cylinder completely off. what should I be lookin for on the solenoid to release the pressure? a switch/lever/set screw.

thanks for the responses guys

On my Johnson there is a set screw that you can back out to lower it manually.

After some close observation, the pump has a knurled knob under the pump housing which does'nt do anything apparently, and there is a set screw on top between the pump and solenoid and that one does less than the knob? I am at a loss!

looking at the motor from the back..i believe it's on the left side, you will see a big screw(may be phillips, not sure)...it may be locate in a hole in the bracket...you should see it...loosen it,lower your engine then tighten it....you might want to take that screw all the way out and inspect the inner tip.they break off and you will lose pressure.trust me.check it good there should be 2 o-rings on it..if you only see one o-ring the chances are the tip is still in there.it can fool you, sometimes it doesn't look broken..if it's broken this will cause you to lose pressure..your motor may go up fine, but it won't come down.if you find that screw(it's actually a valve)broken, get the ser#off the engine plate and order a new screw(valve)it should be under $40....i think it's much cheaper then that.make sure to remove the tip of the old screw..you can use a small screwdriver or an awl.

bassin,
I loosened that screw before to see if anything happened, and the motor did not budge, however I did not completely remove it. should that make a difference?

after you loosened it,did you try to push the motor down?...sometimes there is a (i call it)safety bracket that drops down when the motor is all the way up..maybe on certain makes or size motors, but check that...if you loosened that screw chances are it's broke...mercs have a tendency to do that,(break the tip off that screw when it's loosened).i believe it's only nylon or plastic.
check to see if anything is holding the motor up besides the hyd.unit...and check that screw(valve).

Unless he set the motor tilt bracket unlikely that this is in the way. He stated that when hitting the switch it does make a noise. Need to know if it is just the solenoid or the pump actuating. Can tell by haviing someone operate switch while you are feeling the pump and/or solenoid. On this motor you do have the pump and solenoid in the boats bilge area if no one has changed up the T&T unit. After doing the manule release of hydraulic pressure the motor should have started to go down SLOWLY, it wont drop suddenly as some folks have thought. Try it again and watch carefully and as bassin stated push on the lower unit, may help it to loosen up and start to move. These older units have sevral design flaws. After you do the testing with someone doing the operating of the switch get back to us on whether or not its the solenoid actuating or you feel the pump trying to actuate.

Took it to my boat guy, turns out the knurled knob under the pump is supposed to be opened all the way to prevent the cylinder from locking up, and it was closed all the way. thanks for all your help A fishin I shall go!!

Dont understand what you talkin bout kicker unless you are referring to the control switches and if you are yes you can have multiplr switches. I have seen as many as 4 ! at the seat,in the front and at the rear and one for trailering but they all still go to the same solenoid mounted on the unit.

in fact it was reb
