Default '97 150 Mariner High RPM"S

Engine idles at 1150rpm's in nuetral, then drops to 850rpm's when put in gear. It makes a loud clucking sound when shifting gears. How do you lower the rpms, is there a screw that can be adjusted?

idle should be at 500 or so -don't quote me not a merc guy-every moter i ever used makes a "clunk" going into gear.-the out boards will tend to idle higher out of gear than in gear.. ya might try changing the lower oil i use amsoil-not under warranty no more-or a good synthic lower oil..

That idle is a little high but most Merc's make the "clunking" sound you described. There is an idle adjustment screw to change the RPM's.

I have my engine (125 Merc) idling about 800 or so in neutral.

750 to 850 is norm.

Adjust so it does not kill engine when engaged.

Also check voltage as a high idle is also a sign of bad ground on power pak.

Definatley the idle needs to come down a bit. 700 to 850 should put uou in the ball park. If it wont idle down to that in gear look for arb problems or fuel problems. To high a idle is bad in the lower unit as well as telling you that the engine is not tuned properly.
