What is the best rod length and what action is the best for small michigan bass? And would i need a whole new rod for huge canadian pike or would there be a in-between rod that would be good for both? what is the best brand name of rod also? Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
Best all-around length/action for bass fishing is 6-6 medium heavy action IMO. It will handle most bass fishing situations. Best brand name? There is no "best". Ask 10 bass fishermen the best anything and you'll get 10 different answers. There are a lot of good rods out there-Quantum, Berkley, Shimano, Falcon, AllStar, Loomis, St. Croix-the list goes on and on. It really depends on how much you want to spend.

i fish in Michigan, and trust me, all the largemouth arent small. last year i got a 5.8lber and this year i had one that looked to be bigger then that one but threw the bait about 20ft from the boat. i also fish for pike and catch alot of them while bass fishing with spinnerbaits. i usually use a MH and it can handle pike, my PB 31in. im not sure how big the pike you are going to be catching are, but MH works for me.

My, advice, get a bass pro shops extreme reel, 6.4 gear ratio and a 6'6" mh extreme rod. It will handle pretty much everything you want. You can spool it with many different types of line and it is a good price for the quality. You take care of it and it will last you forever!! http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse $119.98 38-951-272-05 Read Item Notice 1 below ETX10HD 8.6 OZ RIGHT-HAND 6.4:1 28" 12 LB/120 YDS XTR66MHT HANDLE B 10-20 LB 3/8-1 OZ 6' 6" MH 10 GUIDES LB, SB, W, NP, B, R, SN Hope this helps , Jolly

Small Bass is not part of the equasion. You happen to live where there are smallmouth bass.A small smallmouth bass will fight much harder than a largemouth bass will.
What you need to do is figure out what lures you want to use and match your tackle to the lures and more importantly, match the rod action to the lure weight your going to be using. In my opinion you need to buy at least 1 quality rod.I beleive that it is very important to buy the best soft plastic lure rod you can afford, even if it means saving up before you can afford to buy it.In doing this , you will be able to catch fish when others who fish with a entry level rod. You can buy an upper level rod and reel outfit, but they will be good only for specific lure selections due to the rods action. For example. You cannot buy a $240.00 Saint Croix legend TBC70HF 7' heavy action rod and a throw a $159.95 Pflueger summit reel on it and expect to throw a Reaction innovation smallie beaver bait with a 2/0 owner rig n hook and a 1/8 oz. tungstun weight. You will become very angry before the day is out, probably post the Pflueger reel is stupid and it sucks, when in fact its the Heavy action rod blank that is the problem for the lure selection your trying to get it to use it for. That same outfit would work fine for pitching 1/2 oz. jigs in milfoil all day long, or carolina rigging with a 3/4 oz. weight rig setup. Sorry I had to pick on Saint crow and flooger. They are nice equipment, its just a flaw of mine, trying to impress Lizards,& Dodgeguy. I would recommend find a lure selection your going to use and choose the rod action for the lure presentations and match a mid to upper quality reel with them for the long haul.Spinning gear seems to present lighter lure presentation with the least amount of trouble, but if you choose the correct baitcasting rod, you will like it better than a spinning rod outfit. In saying that , I am not always correct, I hope this helps you, don't be afraid to ask for help, there are alot of knowledgable people here who are willing to help.Again I hope this helps. Jolly's right. The extreme combos are a good choice and you don't invest a lot of money.

I think that all of bass pro shops combos are the best for the money, they are all very good and I personally use the extreme series stuff, the rods are pretty sensative while the reels last a long time and cast well.
