Default How to clean cork handles

I fished for hours in the pouring rain today, and after my rods dried out, the cork literally looked new. I've tried washing with soap and rags, but it doesn't work nearly as well. I just thought I'd share. If you've got dirty cork handles, just leave the rods in the rain.

Maybe acid rain. I usually use barkeepers friend or some light scouring powder. I had one that was stained some I bought at an estate sale. It was a nice Fenwick I used rubbing compound....make sure it has no wax.....It cleaned up fairly decent.

Liquid soap and a brush will make cork handles look like new........rinse well.

I have always lightly sanded my handles with a 200+ grit paper and then put a clear coat finish on them. It has kept them looking and feeling like new since I bought them. I can wipe them down with a wet rag when the day is done.
Of course I am stuck in Southern California and am not sure what this "rain" stuff is you are talking about......LOL

I just use dish soap, water and a rag. However, living in the land of liquid sunshine, I can attest in support of your claim about the water cleaning the handles.

I think the patina of stained handles shows character.

Would you fish on a guides boat that is sterile clean?

Would you buy ribs from a 7-Eleven or Hardies?

These are a few things in my life that should never be cleaned.

Engines
Grills
Roofs
and cork handles..

Just one mans thoughts..

Belt Sander! "Whoops... er... I mean, yay! a split grip!"

Anyways, I kind of agree with captmike. I hardly ever clean mine, and if I do it's with very fine sand paper.

Ok, I clean mine in January when I have nothing better to do after hunting season. I need a excuse just to touch my fishing gear while I watch the outdoor channel. Otherwise as long as it works I agree.

clean handles are like brand new work boots, they lust don't look right until there are some scuffs!
