Who slings swine...
...on their jigs? I remember the days of spilling that crap in the boat, but making up for it in fish. I thought about purchasing a few pork trailers and giving them a go again on jigs.
Who is still using them? And what brands are out there?

I use Uncle Josh rinds still. I don't know about numbers, but they certainly produce larger fish for me. I think it's a combination of the way the float, smell, and taste to the bigger fish that just makes them bite. It's always nice in a lake with lots of aggressive bluegill or sunfish too because they can't tear the legs off every cast.

Make my own copied in plastic:
Could be the meaty texture, salty taste or some other sense stimulation that makes bass bite or hold on to real pork, but I'm rather of the opinion that the tails flapping & fluttering is the primary reason along with the bulky appearance the chunk body gives a skirted jig. My largest bass last year, a 7lb 6oz, was caught on a jig with a rubber pork copy. Like with any lure we believe in, we tend to do better with lures we cast more. I don't use them as jig trailers. But I do (sometimes) use pork rind strips instead of weightless soft plastic stick bait. I love how a BPS Sticko falls through the water. But for shear action, a 6" strip of rind, hooked through the nose ... looks like a stripper's feather boa coming through the water.

I don't dig on swine. Pig's are filthy animals.

The Jumbo pork frog was always a good bait for me fished on a weedless hook around little pads and surface weeds fished weightless. But I haven't done that in about 20 years. I should try it again. I think bass are getting used to today typical frog baits.

I wonder if bass shy away from any bait that a water has seen frequently.

You would think so, senko, but lots of old time baits still perform like the day they hit the market

I don't care how many times a fish has seen a lure, it doesn't "think" about it like we do. BUT ... if a fish has been caught and released, it's possible to condition it not to hit the same lure twice. Wild animals stay away from things that are a threat ... and something that bites like a hook will be perceived as a threat. So, if a body of water is pelted with the same lure, and sufficient fish get conditioned to avoid a certain color or type of lure ... their "flight" response can trigger other fish to avoid the same threat. The smaller the body of water, the better the odds that a majority of fish have been "bitten" by the same lure, and the threat is alerting most of the population away. Catch and release is not making "smarter" fish ... but it can condition the bite instinct out of a population for short periods of time. I believe this, anyway. |
