Lower Unit Oil Leakage?
Got the boat on the trailer at Beaver Lake after fishing a two day tournament...noticed some lower unit oil coming out of one of the holes on the side of the lower unit up towards the top where you take it off. I am thinking it is a seal thats going. Can't believe it would be anything major cause my boat was topping out at 50mph the whole day. Looks like I got to win this weekend or else the boat might be out of commission for a while. Anyone got any ideas on what it could be?

Agree it's probably the gasket. Check your lower unit oil when you replace the gasket. You may have had some water intrusion into the gear case - you will likely have to change the oil.

Could be a shift shaft seal also If it is not coming out at the screw for filling I would have it Checked . If gease is comeing out Water is going in. 250 dollar repair is cheaper that 200 dollar lower unit

Is your engine carbed? I had an older evinrude once that I was sure the lower unit oil was leaking from. Each time I would park it and trim down the motor there would be oil leaked out underneath. After changing the gaskets with no luck I noticed that it was running to rich and the oil was actually unburned 2 cycle oil. It sure had me baffled. I would change the LU oil and it would be clean as a whistle. Hope this helps.

barkelypup has a point two cycle oil can run down through the midsection and leak out around the lower unit
I would take the top screw out of the lower unit( the vent hose ) and see if any gease comes out with the motor down in the running position If grease comes out then the level of the dgrease is higher than it was when filled. and the is a good chance water is in it. I change mine gease 3 times a year to check for water it is cheaper than locking a unit up from being full of water like mine was in January this year. I caught it in time and had the seals replaced. |
