walkin' the bug

one of my favorite things to do with a floating lure is to do what i call is walkin' the bug!!

you just have to twitch is so that is slowly advances over the water, i mean really slowly, just so it looks like a little bug swimming on the water. i have caught alot of fish this way, and the strikes are awesome!

You are not kidding, toppwatr. If I manage to drag my sorry arse out of bed in time, I love to get into some quiet cove before the sun really comes up and things get wavy. Twitching a broken back floating Rapala has elicited some MONSTER strikes for me in the past before. I don't know what it is about the jointed lure that makes it work better....maybe the extra rattle?

lol yea. the strategy works best when there is minimal to no chop in the water. than it is just peace and quiet.............until BAM!!!! my friend even got a bass on a rapala with the bill broken off.

Ya, I do that is the jointed rapalas too! Works great!

I agree whole heartedly. That technique had been an early morning standard for years. A number 6 or 8 Rapala, and also a Baby Torpedo works extemely well.

Just curious what size these lures are that you do this with?

I have one of those model a bombers that's incredibly buoyant and maybe this is something i can use it for effectively.

well for panfish and bass, i use an f-4 and f-5 rapala. you can use the bombers but they might submerge if you work it fast enough. probably your best bet is just a floating rapala, although my friend did do it with a bomber, but you just have to work it slower.

for all bass i would use either a size 6 rapala or like a size 6-8 split.

I have even used a tiny, tiny broken back Rapala (less than 2" long) and had a heck of a time doing bluegills topwater style. I never knew bluegills could jump like that.

zara spook is the best for walking the dog. devil horse, pop-r, hula popper are some really great slow topwater baits.
