Default Livewell

I fish on old challenger with a 20Gal aprox. live well. I fish in oklahoma (hot in the summer), I have added a thru hull aerator/recirculator pump and still are losing fish.

I have heard that some guys will pump out about half of the water and refill the livewell every couple of hours.

Any suggestions?

are your livewell lids insulated?...you can also use spray foam insulation around the livewell..ice...or that catch and release stuff works good.

most of the clowns i fish with keep it unplugged, and then when they run the livewell drains and the bass end up floppin' around till you remember to reach in and put in the plug.... seriously tho, you want to have the timer set on auto or do it manually every now and then, the warmer the water is, you want aeriation as much as your battery will allow. Plus fish shrink a 1/16 or so when the water is really warm. Most guys I know put that blue stuff in their live wells and let the pump run for awhile after we get done running and gunning and settle down. A timer every 15 minutes to run for a while for instance..

auto timer is great. i also add the blue stuff-i have seen it called about 12 differant names- during the summer having a drink cooler full of ice comes in real handy .i add ice normally after 10am..

I like adding ice, catch and release formulas and a good pump. You may have to drain your water alittle because of acids building up.

Rejuvenade is great, and ICE. Haven't seen anyone lose a fish yet, with the combination of those 2.

Thanks guys, got some work to do. Do you have to worry about the water getting too cold? guess as long as I don't turn it into a cooler i'll be OK.

80 degree live well water temps at 7 am. can be ugly and over 100 degrees by days end. adding a 1/2 a bag around 10-11 am and the rest around 2 pm.. fish will come out livly as can be. if you do this use a culling system. as it is much much easier to remove a frisky fish from mind numbing cold water on the culling system.

The blue stuff I use is called Please Release Me. Haven't had to go the ice route yet-haven't kept any when it is real hot.

I remember reading somewhere not to use regular ice due to the chlorine content-anybody else heard this?

Yes I have heard the same, but they still will tell you in every BFL tourney during the hotter months to get a bag of ice, they'll even buy it if you can't. Since I don't have a boat to fish these tourneys in I don't do this, but what you should do is get a coke/water/milk jug etc... and fill them with water and freeze them, lasts a lot longer and no chlorine issues.

i keep about 100 bottles in my freezer out in the garage.i fill my cooler leaving just enough room for my food and drinks so i have plenty of extra ice to put in the livewells if needed.

Rejuvinade and Please Release Me are the 2 best on the market in terms of the chemical rejuvinators(sp). I agree 100% with ice in the well. I also freeze water bottles and use them too. They stay frozen(colder) longer than plain Ice that will melt and when you pump water into your well and it recirculates you lose some of the colder water but you dont with the bottles.

Water bottles with ice and please release has always done well for me. Here where 80 degree water temp is cold at 6 in the morning can turn into a easy 100 degree fish boil ifn you dont pay attention. I use a recircuating pump with the additive and the ice bottle and does very well.

These are all good points the catch and release formulas, ice and auto areators all help. Delayed mortality is a real poblem. During the hot months a high percentage of the fish that swim away still die within 72 hours.Locally there are very few day tournaments in June July or August. The night tournaments are just easier on the fish and the fishermen. I will offer this tip. If a fish that has been in the lve well for a while suddenly become real active you better pay attention. That is what they will often do right before they die, If that happens try to change the water to get the uratic acid out then add ice and catch and release. This is especially true if you have a lot of fish in the live well. That fish still may die with in a day or two but that will usually save it for the live weigh-in. Delayed mortality is a real problem but catch and realease is better than the catch and keep of days gone by,
