Default Know where you're at...

and what you're surroundings are. On Tuesday I had to run out to youth sports and get my son signed up for basketball. Right across the road is one of the lakes we have on base.

Actually it's a water reservoir and every 3 years the EPA requires them drain to a certain percentage of the water. The fishing sucks out there and I knew that, but I thought, "ah, what the heck I'm there might as well give it a go!". The water is probably down 12-15 feet, none of the docks are in water, the boat ramp is probably 6-10 foot from any water and all the lilies are dead. The toolies are barely hanging on.

So I go out to the backside of the lake and make my way down the bank and start walking down to the waters edge. As I'm making my way towards the water to ground looks like dry, but it was still a little soft. So I told myself, "I'll keep pushing out to the water, footing seems pretty solid." No sooner did that thought cross my mind, the next step I was literally knee deep in mud. Fortunately it was only one leg and not both as I think I would have stuck. This was the type of mud that created a suction and I had to fight for my flip flops life. I thought it was goner. Here are a couple of pics, one of the ground I was walking on and one of my legs after I got it unstuck...LOL!

I think I may give Bill Dance a run for fishing bloopers

That happens in one of the lakes I wade in. The bottom one second is hard and the next step you hit soft mud and clay....AND SINK! That one step will or can be as deep as 3-4 feet. At times I'll have one foot still on solid ground. Then pulling out with some effort is easy. Other times if I feel the foot sinking in, in an effort to quick step and avoid the trap I'll end up sinking both in....now that takes a lot of effort plus if I over step I literally can end up taking a long time and multiple steps to find hard ground again. I must fidget the feet or really one foot at a time to stop the suction, and with much effort to than pull it out of the muck. Just to have to do again all over.
Sometimes there will be patches where I'll sink down like a foot only and can walk the bank only to find ONE deep sink-age spot. Bottom all looks the same and there is no telling where or what lies ahead.
Really adds to the adventure!

Nice save of the flop! Had a similar indecent, except the temp was 49°, and I was in muck boots.

Back in highschool, I went fishing with a classmate in his truck. We went to wheeler, near the flats, and pulled up close to a mudflat. One of us said go ahead and drive out on the flat, save us the walking, and the other said naw lets park here (dont remember who said what)

Anyway, we parked and walked instead of driving onto the flat. Which was a good thing, as both my feet sank past my knees in mud as soon as I hit one spot on the flat. Who knows what would have happened had we driven.
