The reason they are so good in winter is the slowwww fall you get from them, thats hard to achieve with soft plastics. Be sure and use a bulky trailer or better yet pork to further slow the descent.

We always vertically fish with a jigging spoon. (Hopkin's etc..). First, find your fish with a depth finder. They will normally be deep, but there may be schools of shad nearby. Just drop your jig to the desired depth, and start jigging it. Often, they'll hit your bait on the fall, be prepared.

Sorry Nick, you have to learn how to fish a jig and pig. The strikes can be unbelievable to almost non existent. So in my opinion, jigs.

I mainly use 3: A spinnerbait fished sloooow, the dreaded jig-n-pig, and a suspending jerkbait.

In the winter our water temp drops to about 40 degrees, so I don’t know if that is as cold as your.

And I like to fish jigs but jigs don’t like me much either so I normally fish with plastics.
In the morning I had good success with a t-rig junebug brushog and as soon as the sun start shining into the water I change to a pumpkinseed wildthing.

I mostly fish as deep inside the reeds and bushes as I can, always fish very slowly and use big baits

There is no one bait that is going to catch fish everyday of the week during the wintertime. The first thing you need to do, instead of worrying about lure choice, is worry about locating fish. Once you have located fish, then worry about lure choice. You will choose your lure as to the location and activity level of the fish. Yes, some fish will be active during the winter. Now, a jig and pig is very effective during the winter for larger fish. You won't catch as many fish on this bait as you would others, but your average fish tends to be bigger. This is really not due to the rate of fall. I can make a plastic worm fall as slow as I want it, or a lizard, or a fluke, or any other soft plastic. A jig is effective during cold weather months mainly because they are big, bulky, and you usually fish them very slow. Other than a jig, many other baits will continue to catch fish. In fact, most all of your autumn baits will continue to produce. You just have to know where to fish them, and slow down. Good fishing.

Drop Shotting with Roboworms or any finesse baits. It is a very boring way to catch bass, but it works.

Are you saying a Jig is slower falling than a weightless Plastic ??? If you are, then I guess I would have to disagree with you here.

I use Flukes, Lizards, And some spoons(no luck in winter with these yet), plus the PNJ. I will pretty much do the deadsticking thing around any timber I can find. If the Lake is frozen, I plan a trip to FL to see my dad, or this year go to the Lakes that provide electricity, and cool the turbines with the water, therefor keeping it WARM year round. I would say that form the posts, if you are ICE fishing, talk to Bassintom, he does it a lot.

Almost forgot, as zooker said, a Storm wild eye swim bait. Just pump that baby back in a often times the fish will nail it.

NOTE: I prefer the shad color in 4" size

i like the 3.5 inch calcutta swim baits alot like the wild eye except the weight is mostly in the belly of the bait not near the head it falls nice and level. not dive head first in the bottom.

In winter here the water drops to 32 degrees F.

Colder than that if enough salt comes in from the roads I suppose. You can ice fish though. Just chop a hole in the ice and stick in a jigging spoon...

Ha, we get to fish year round here. The water doesn't really get colder than 60 anywhere.
