weighted vs weightless senkos

hey, i got sort of a dillemma here. i love fishing senkos weightless, but sometimes u have to throw some weight on there in windy situations. when do u guess prefer to fish weightless and not?

I prefer weighted.

In flat water, or earlier in the year, I fish them weightless. When it heats up, and the fish chase/get energized, I use a small, 1/4 or smaller weight

It is one of those questions that can be answered by yourself, is not a matter of preference, is a matter of if you need to weight or not. If fishing them weightless is causing you to loose contact with the bait under a particular circumstance ( like windy conditions ) and adding weight allows you to regain contact with your bait the answer is to weight them, if you loose contact with the bait you don´t know what the bait is doing and knowing what the bait is doing is a key part on fishing a bait effectively. Whenever I need to weight stickbaits I do it wihout any remorse.

I typically don't use weight because it takes away from the natural action of the bait.

How did you rig it?

The only time I weight a senko-type bait is wacky rigging it-I put a small finishing nail in each end. I normally use Wave Worm Tikis, but when it is windy switch to Bamboo Sticks. A little bigger, fatter, and heavier.

Read Raul's response again LOL. Only time I ever weight Senko's is on a c-rig. Otherwise I use different baits.

Split shotting senkos is a lethal presentation Lizardsrule, a #3 or #5 split shot 8-10 inches ahead of the bait....watch out !

i usually go weightless cause i feel its in the fishes face more and stays in the strike zone longer...

I fish the majority of my plastics weightless or with very small weights. I'm largely a finnesse guy, patience and weightless plastics will catch fish anywhere you go, and you'll pick up fish that other people missed.

I do exactly the same. Bamboo Sticks works great under a windy condition. I think Senko has made this kind fat stick this year too, right?

if needed, a Snagless Slider Hook or Spider Hook by Charlie Brewer is an excellent choice for gettting the lure down, but if you want a little action rather than using the 1/16 oz hooks already mentioned, clamp on a split shot a couple of feet up the line from the lure.

An option to senko and knock off lures is the body of a zoom speedworm in watermelon/red....simply cut off the tail a half inch up onto the worm body and use that.

Weightless t-rigged or wacky senkos work even when its hot down here. I catchem on sluggos on top sometime too.

I've actually never fished a senko with a weight, but I have fished a powerworm with weight, and for stickbaits, I prefer weightless.

Sorry I forgot to thank you for the tip. I have actually been throwing some Senko's lately They have been working decent though. I will give it a try. Any reason why I couldn't just move a pegged bullet weight up the line? Just a thought. The Mojo-rig version of the c-rig is usually what I use in really weedy areas. The Mojo weight gets through the vegetation better than any other weight I know of, except of course the Grassmaster Jig I usually won't use longer than a 12" leader. Thanks again, I will try it out.

The reason why I use a split shot instead of pegging is beacuse I want the bait to dart free behind the weight on the leader Lizardsrule but without adding too much weight, just enough to allow the bait to sink faster and keeping it on the bottom. What happens when you jerk the bait, the bait rises at warp speed and then it takes a long time befor it hits the bottom again depending upon how hard you jerked it, with the split shot the bait doesn´t rise so much and sinks right away, also y can "dance" the bait without having the bait skyrocketing, just with small twitches of the rod tip the bait dangles and darts on the leader but the weight of the split shot is enough to keep the bait in place.

Not that I always weight senkos, I weight them when the contour of the terrain, the steepness of the bank and the nature of the bottom ask me to do so.
