Lake Erie Smallmouth
What are some of the best lures to use when catching lake erie smallmouth? I fish most out of Sandusky, Ohio, particulary at the Jackson Street Pier. I have caught some bluegill and a couple of channels but cant hook the bass in the summer time. Please Reply!

Re: Lake Erie Smallmouth
are you fishing for boat or a pier? try a spinnerbait, crankbait or tubes.

Everything I read about smallmouths, is crawfish type baits(pig-n-jig, tubes) or smaller spinner and cranks. There is also a bait called the Sweet Beaver that is supposed to be good, and YUM makes a bait very close to those called a wooly hogtail.

Re: Lake Erie Smallmouth
you could try some 3"grubs on a jighead...vary the retrieve and depth.

Just watched a show the other day on exactly what you are asking. They were using bright pink stick worms, probably a senko if I remember correct. They were c-rigged and t-rigged. Caught a lot of good sized smallmouths, not sure when it was though. It looked windy and cold, but the sun was out. Im guessing maybe late fall. 8)

Re: Lake Erie Smallmouth
I live just about an hour or so from the lake, but, sadly, have never fished there. However, I know that a very popular technique is dragging a tube. That would be a tube with an insert jighead, dragged along the bottom while the boat is drifting with the wind.
Some of the guys like to use the jigheads that have the line tie at a 60° angle to the head, rather than the usual 90°. Of course, you'll have to find the spots. |
