Default Starter Baitcaster

What is a good type of baitcasting rod/reel combo to start out with. I am looking for something under 50 bucks?

rrw, you can find a decent, workable combo at someplace like Walmart in that range. If you stick with a name brand like Quantum, Diawa, or Shimano you will be good to go. Some people recommend getting a more expensive setup, but I recommend this route because it allows you to learn to use one without spending a lot up front. You can move up to more expensive reels as you progress. Once you get it, check out this site:

It will answer the questions you have and get you pointed in the right direction.

I just hooked up a kid with a Diawa (39 bucks)
and showed him how to work it...
I started out with a Diawa that is kinda small but a good one to learn on.
Had a ambassader as a kid but always backlashed,
then went to a bigger red one along with the diawa that finally got me going in the right direction

JB, where did you get that reel at? Was it just a reel or a rod/reel combo? Thanks

I would say get a really good reel and then you won't have to upgrade later which could save you money in the long run plus those reel that are cheaper will only last a couple of months before they where out.

IL.bassin,

Thats the same reel that I had. Bought it at Bass Pro for $23.00, it was my first baicaster. I then went and bought a Lews BB1 for $64.00 and at that time it was the most expensive reel that I could find. Since then they are basically worn out. However, I've still got these old reels for my collection.
