Default Lake Philpott?

I don't know if this is the right section for this....

Our Junior Bass Club has a national tournament at lake Philpott, on May 5-6. I am assuming the bass will be spawning? If anybody has ever fished this lake, and knows baits or colors, or any tips, they would be appreciated! I'll try to find out where we will be launching out of.

Thanks Ben

Ya may want to explore using google and type in fishing reports for that lake, heres what I got for the last few days
PHILPOTT LAKE - The lake is clear, but the water temperature is in the mid-
fifties. Crappie and bass are being caught on live bait. Bluegills are taking
nightcrawlers and fly rod poppers. Smith River trout anglers continue to do
well, as do trout anglers in the lake, when the turbines are not turning.

that temp would mean to me pre spawn, or getting ready to bed but still biting, I'd take rattle trap, spinnerbait, jig/craw type baits, probably fish in the 3-5 foot range of depth. By may5 or 6th it could very well mean the water temp is near 60-62 and fish could be on the beds, but you can still get buck(male bass) to hit, and some females too.

I live about 45 mins from Phillpt and it is a really nice lake. It can be tough to fish but yall are going there at a good time. Prespawn should be getting starting if it hasnt already (well if it doesnt snow to much more :-D). It also has an area on the lake (oppisite of the dam) where no skier's or Jetskis are allowed. I have found some good fishing there but havent had a lot of luck there. I did win my first tourney on Philpot. Good Luck on your tourney.

Sorry I've never fished it. Can't be of much help other than you'll be around a new moon and if the water temps don't get over the 60 degree range soon you might hit a new moon spawn. Full moon is coming at the end of this month and some fish will spawn if the water gets warm enough. I got out on Anna last week and caught two bucks on crankbait and 5" finesse worm in 2-4' of water. Water temps were 56 to 62 degrees but I did not see many beds or shallow fish at all.

VA,

Try this website for Virginia and Maryland fishing reports. There are several on Philpott.

Some probably would, but the best Tx advice I can give you, if you want to bed fish, is to have some in the livewell first. I've seen guys spend all day with a few bedding fish, to come back to the weigh in empty handed, talking about the 8 pounder they coulda caught!

try to get your hands on a recent lake survey: it will usually have forage fish populations... great for picking bait colors

The first thing I'd do is petition the state to change the name of the lake.
PHILPOTT No self-respecting bass would live in that.
Ask them to change it to something manly, like Lake Scharwzenegger, Lake Patton, or better yet, Lake FlyRod.

Sincerely,
FlyRod

Anna temps at the mid-lake area was 49 degrees this morning. We found a few bass shallow down lake but very few and far between. We also went up lake and fished one creek and couple other areas and caught nothing. It took 13lbs to win a team tournament today. Final temp we found was 62 degrees after a warm sunny day. Keep an eye on the weather this week and if it stays warm then next weekend should be good.

Check out the website http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/philpott/index.htm

What's the matter with Philpott? Built by your US Army Corps of Engineers!!! You better be nice, they have friends.....

Anna this weekend....49 degrees on Sat morning....75 degrees on Sun afternoon . I found all kinds of quality fish moving up to spawn today. Even found a bed with some "he'in and she'in" going on (got to give that quote to Cambell Edenton of Sturgeon Creek Marina). 5 fish 18 lbs won today's tournament with a couple citations being weighed in (22 inches or 8lbs). I caught squat today
