I would not throw 10 into the heavy cover. I think that is just asking for problems. If you want to stick with that weight, then I would suggest not getting deep in the heavy stuff but only working the last 2-3 foot and the edges.

Thanks for the info, I will have to get some braid. Dont think I will have to go to high since the bass are not as big up north as the warm areas.

In the pads, it is not just the size of the pass. If you get enough pads on wrapped up you could find that even 20 lbs is not enough.
Since pads are translucent, it is not uncommon for the fish to go through the pad to get the bait. This results with at least one in the bass' mouth that you also have to account for.

you know they are thick when you watch a 1/2 oz jig sit on top of them.
one of the other things I failed to mention in thick pads is to go with a T rigged 7+ inch worm. I prefer to cast onto the shore and then try to skp them back to me. If I can find an opening, I will let them fall into it and then "slither" it back on top. If you are just starting to toss into pads, please note: real frogs are either very arroused or canibals when you start throwing into the pads and muck. while it may not be something you hang pictures of, large frogs can be a blast to hook.

You guys are a wealth of info. I did some web searching last night and am looking at a BPS Nitro or a Team Diawa Light & Heavy Frog Rod. Both have the backbone and a fast tip. The BPS is 1/2 the price of the Diawa but I'm leaning toward the Diawa anyways. Comments and opinions?? Also I guess I'm going to try lots of your suggestions this year and see what works best. Frogs and jigs but use the jigs on the edges, in the closer holes and in the near by weeds. Can't afford to be losing much tackle. anyways, a plan is forming; am going with the Power Pro braid, Spro frogs and either Strike King, Bass Stalker or trying a JigX. Also will use various trailers including creatures and pork. Just have to get to warm weather and buy the rod!

Kinda blasted through the answers. First, don't think the rod/reel setup is gonna be strong enough. Another idea, saw it done by a guywho was fishing some heavy pads. Bring a potato rake or hoe, pull out a area of pads and make yourself a nice long casting area, do this in a handful of places and then go back to your first area and start fishing. This opens up the slop some and by doing multiple areas gives time for things to settle back down. You basically create an ambush line for the fish

I agree with Bamabassman use braid and forget the leader your just asking for trouble there. Tie stright to the jig or hook or whatever. I use 50# braid. You have got to have something heavy enough to turn him and something that will cut thru thr grass. This is flipping I,m talking about, but the same goes for a frog you got yo get him out of that grass and pads as quick as you can.

Don't be afraid to flip or pitch into the pads that's mainly where the fish are at, you just got to have the right rod (Flipping and pitching Medium to Heavy) line(Braid) 30 to 50 pound, to get them out fast, you got to turn their heads quick so they are coming towards you then reel like He%#. I use 50# power pro, I know some might think this is to heavy but I watched a show and Roland Martin was using 60#. Don't use pork after the water temp get's past 50 -55 degrees plastic is better when the water warms, pork is better when the water is cold. If your fishing clear water you might want to use a smaller braid, but in dirty water go strong. Don't tie on no leader because then you got 2 knots to worry about, plus you weaken your line to whatever the leader is. Good fishing

I know a lot of people like heavy duty rods, big hooks, heavy weight, and 50# braid but I've got a friend who catches many and I mean a lot of big quality Potomac river (and elsewhere) bass on 10lb line (or less), 1/0 hooks, and your ordinary 6'6" M rods. And he does not lose a lot of fish. How you ask? Simple he waits on the fish after a blow up, watches his line, and sets the hook normally, and then he goes and gets the fish after they bury up in the grass. His two best fish this summer was a 8.4 and 6.3. Just something to think about.

FISH2 - 10 minutes away. Hogback is on Rt. 20, across from the small municipal airport west of Angola proper and the I69 interchange. You go to Jimmerson, James or Snow regular?

I fish a pond in Delaware during the summer and it is LOADED with thick lillypads. I throw a YUM buzzfrog on 50lb Power Pro braid and reel it fast keeping it on the top. The strikes are VERY exciting and happen often. I like to count to 2 before setting the hook when I see a swirl. I sometimes throw the Spro frogs but I find that in the thick stuff a buzzfrog creates more disturbance and gets more bites.

We use to rent a cottage for a week on Lake James and go fishing everyday. I'm from Bryan I just go to school in Columbus so I know the area pretty well. I'm gonna have to try to get over there and do some fishing this year it sounds like a great lake with some great cover
