Default First bass of the year and a nice one too

I was out fishing with Tony of "Tantrum Lures" today for the first real outing of the year on water I could not walk on. Â*Here in the frozen north your bass season can be kinda short.
Water temp was in the mid 40's and we fished a slew off the river here. Â*
My first fish was a 4 pound 19 1/2 " L.M. I got it on a proto type bait that I'm working on called a Phat-Fool. Its a 6" Sink-N-Fool bait on steroids. Its a wide flat bait that weighs in at almost an oz. It's the best skipping bait I've ever seen. because of it's weight and wide flat body I could skip it easily 20 feet. Â*This bait could be a dock fishermans dream bait. LOL
I was skipping a red shad colored one (dark maroon red bottom with red flake and a black back) back under down trees when I picked up the 4 pounder. Â*We got 3 fish total which is not bad for this time of year here. Â*
This is a whole month earlier then when I got my first fish last year. The 4 lb. was the biggest of the group.
I got a hard hit on a new little paddle tail grub I make, but I managed to screw that one up because I did not check my drag on my bait caster and it had backed off. It felt like a nice fish too, but when I went to set the hook it just spun the reel. Â*Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Note to self, check all drags! I'm hoping to go down to the chain lakes this Tuesday and do some Pike fishing and test my new Phat-Fool bait a little more, but most of the time I'll be throwing my 10" Super Jerk-N-Fool baits on a steel leader. Ah toothy critters gotta love em. Â*
I forgot the camera at home so I didn't get any pixs of the fish but I can show ya the bait at least.
Here is a few samples of what the Phat-Fool looks like, The Top one is a red shad like I got the 4 lb.er on.
The middle one is a chartruse bait that I colored with a shapie to see how it worked. The last one is a green shad {Chartruse green with black flake on bottom black on top}

Please note that my digital camera made these look much darker then they really are.

Nice to see you are getting out. If it makes you feel better, I probably won't get my first bass until late April at the earliest.

Welcome to the show, watch your step, theres plenty of ka-ka around. As for your first fish, you can catch them NOW, I live in Indiana, and have already been fishing 3 times(caught a total of 6 bass the biggest approx 3lbs didn't weight it). No it's not great weather or conditions for catching them, but better than sitting at home and dreaming about it
