Raising Quail
I'm considering it as a little sping/summer project. Fresh eggs, fresh meat, fertilizer, something to do. I've put a little research in, and it seems like a fairly cheap thing to do. Anybody know anything about it?

yep though the eggs are dinky a tad larger than a peanut m&m.. i will have about 50 left after hunting season.. last september i had bout 300. i have the type called tenn. reds along with regular bobwhites.. the reds are MUCH MUCH faster when flushed. i used to put 10 or so in old rabbit pens but they are a pain to get out..i have a 30x10x10 foot elevated building that is entirly fenced. and it must be tightly fenced and at least 24" off the ground. i average 30 a year escaping. a completely tinned roof is a must have. make sure the fence is complete BEFORE the roof is added.. the roof keeps birds of prey from getting your quail.. quail are some hardy lil fellers i use a chicken brooder light they dog pile under during the winter.
remember i like rabbit cages for a reason snakes will have a feild day if they are on the ground.. you are raising an animal that is at the very bottom of the food chain.. i have my birds surounded by hunting dogs for a reason..cats, possums, and raccoons are a pest. weasels are worst than that. birds of prey can kill 20 just by flying into the cage-no joke-. i built the big cage out of 2x4 fenced it and placed plywood over the top of the fence. there is a 3 foot gap at the top for air to pass thru.. 50 pounds of regular bird seed last about a month i switch to a sunflower seed type feed in august.-sunflower seeds are like caffine to the birds- let me know if you need more help zooker

my neighbor raises them and dozens of other types of birds, coyates, foxes and other critters get in the barn and eat them, its hard to keep them out.
he keeps them in a old sheep shed, that is enclosed, but every now and then they come up missing...all birds are good for a alarm system, most go apesh*t when someone pulls up in the lane. |
