Talking baby bass

i was looking at some rapala lures, and saw that some of them were available in "baby bass" colors. they looked quite like a real baby bass. how tempted will big bass be when you throw one of these? do they go for small bass often?

Probably no better than a shad color. Bass may feel comfortable eating something that loosely resembles it's forage, but also frequently eat lures that resemble nothing it eats. Pretty paint jobs catch fishermen, not necessarily fish, but I've found that some color combos excel occassionally on a particular day. Was it because I found groups of turned on fish or was it the lure? I still believe my perch colored Thunder Stick is a winner!

That's a good color that baby bass. Do a search for cold crankbaiting and a older post of mine should come up on a dt bait in that color

i personally think that is a good color. i was using a skitter walk topwater and caught 3 2lb bass. i also have a shallow diving crank in that color, and a blue gill. try them out i think rapala is a very good crank

Color isn't high on my list of priorities, but baby bass is a pretty standard color, one of zillions of colors that work well.

I have one bomber that works in baby bass, and almost always start with a torpedo or the tiny torpedo in baby bass.
Zook, is that plug a poes?

I believe that as long as the bass can actually see the lure, color doesn't matter. That said, some colors show up better in different waters, so you have to determine what will be most visible.

so its not like they favor eating their own kind over other species? they are just indifferent to the species of their prey?

I have no knowledge of it, but I don't think lures have to be imitative to be successful. Any creature that's been around for thousands of years knows what's food and what isn't. I think most strikes are from anger, curiosity, territoriality or some similar reason.

Again, just an opinion based on years of seeing lures of every conceivable size, shape, color and action be successful.

I think its pretty much a given that bass don't care too terribly much if what they eat is a "bass" or a sparkling orange square of wood that smells like food...you know what I mean?

the imitation comes from movement and vibration most of the time, in my opinion, and then my opinion of colors is just to get the bait visible on a given day. Obvious rule of thumb is the clearer the water, the more natural the color of the bait should be.

The bait you showed looks like a rattlin' rapala, so you have to keep in mind how fast that bait is going to be moving. The strike will be a reactionary strike 9 times out of 10..so color and pattern would be less important than a bait you're gonna have sitting in front of the fishes face for however long.

Exactly. Bass are opportunists. They will go for anything they think they can eat.

Default is detail important???

First, my standard ebay auction disclaimer. This is only my opinion even though its based on many thousands of hours of testing, analysis and an unbiased scientic approach. Also, I'm selling this car for a relative, so if the piece of crap dies as you're leaving my driveway, please chase him.

My favorite bait for bass feeding on a school of silver shiners is a 6" black, featureless piece of plastic(Culprit) behind a 64th oz. bullet. I claim I can outfish baits that more accurately duplicate the scale pattern, eye color, smell, zodiac sign or preference in fine wines of the actual shiners being pursued.

If that's true, then one might conject that 99% of the contents of most fishermen's tackle "collections" are purchased for their ability to attract, not the fish, but the fisherman.

As has become my common practice of closing with an idiotic comment, if buyer's personal tastes were not the deciding factor, JackL would not have his collection of tartan plaid Calvin Klein underwear.
