How do you know they were five-pounders? I don't know how people can tell you what you're doing wrong if you don't tell them first what you're actually doing. Why not take us through the sequence of events: how you detected the bite and exactly each step you took after that and how long the fish was on.

you have me confused ....in the 10" lizard thread you say you're catching fish and in this thread you say you're not..which thread is true and which is BS?
i've been bass fishing 20+years and i can't tell if the fish i miss is 2 lbs or 10 lbs.what's the secret to telling the exact weight of a fish you do not catch? are you psychic?............or....psycho?lol

Well i'm not gonna give you a hard time about the 5 pounder deal even though like others said i don't see how you can tell they were five pounders. But you might be setting the hook to late or possibly to early. MY PERSONAL hook set time basically goes like this....i'm twitching the bait or letting it sit..i reel really slow and if i feel tension and a tad bit hitting, i reel down to get the slack back in and set the hook hard, now most of the time this works great for me but others probably have different ways. The only bad thing about my way is sometimes it's a bit to late because of the reel down...you might want to do it fast, if you watch Bill Dance he baically does the same thing. Also you might not be setting the hook hard enough,..sometimes it's alright to jerk that thing, but i wouldn't go crazy, to hard can cause you to ripe his lips off or tear his insides...then the lure might hit you or your buddy in the face. Also try going with something smaller...buy a pack of 5-6 inch worms..and cut them in half. It could be a variety of different things but take these tips into consideration next time you go out.

I'm a newbie on here was iinvited by zooker he said I'd probably enjoy this site and maybe of some help. So here goes. Number 1 are your hooks sharp and when I say sharp I'm talkin that they'll hang on your thumbnail turned sideways with the weight pullin on em. #2 What kinda hook you using and how you riggin it. I like the offset or ewg gammys myself in a 5/0 for 6" lizards and rig em texposed. Another good hook to use on plastics if your havin trouble hookin up is the Mister Twister keeper hooks.(A tip given to me by Larry Nixon at a seminar) and believe me they do work great.#4 I s the rod stiff enuf for what ya doin. I prefer a pool cue or a broom handle with a good piece of goat rope for jigs and plastics Naw but rreally a med./hvy is my preference. One thing I don't do is reel all the way down, leave a little slack this acts as a whipping action which has more speed than rippin on a line with no slack.(Another Nixon tip) that's about all I can come up with now. Dang I got long winded for my first post I try to conttrol myself from now on.

Reel your slack up, and hit that sucker so hard you cross his eyes.

NC, I sit here and wonder the same thing. I get a kick out of all these people that say "I missed the fish but it was a good 10lbs"..my butt.
How does someone KNOW what they're missing unless they are sight fishing? And even then, KEEP THROWING TO THE FISH TIL IT EATS! I wouldn't begin to be able to know the size of the fish hitting my line..don't have a clue how anybody knows. IMO, smaller bass are harder to catch than larger ones..because they hit like bluegills instead of grabbing and holding on. |

Exactly, Ken. A larger bass would likely inhale a lizard. I caught four bass the last time out. I caught all of them on a tiki stick. Three were about 1-1.5 lbs, and the fourth was about 2.75 lbs. The fourth I gut-hooked. He hit the tiki stick on the initial fall. In my experience, non-spawning big bass don't mess around.

you guys don't have those high tech underwater cameras installed in your lures.the screen mounts on your reel and estimates the fish weight.you gotta get one!!!

at what point is the fish coming unbuttoned?
if it's right at the hokset then maybe you should wait a bit longer or maybe the fish was simply moving the bait of a bed and only picked up the tail.... if it's after you've felt the weight of the fish are you reeling up the slack in your line? before putting the knock out blow hook set into them? ARE you actually setting the hook or are you simply lifting the rod a slight bit and reeling in....some times you realy have to knock it to them to set the hook past the barb especially if you have the hook buried deep in the plastic. other than that alot of the posts above are very very important. 1...SHARP HOOKS!!!!!!!! is more important than you could imagine... 2. size of hook is almost as important. if you're fishing a 2/0 hook up it to a 3/ or 4/o ewg and try that out. |
