Default 20 years experience or 1 yr 20 times

Over the years I've had the opportunity to share a boat with many fisherman. I used to think I'd always learn something from a guy with 5/10/15/20+ years of experience, and sometimes I did but just as often it was apparent I was fishing with a person that was just plain stuck in whatever comfort zone they found in year one. I have also fished with people with 1/10th the time on the water as me that just flat out took me to school! I prefer the latter. King Solomon once wrote "There's nothing new under the sun" With all due respect to Solomons wisdom I'm thankful that every fishing experience can bring something new.

I am lucky enough to fish with a wide range of anglers, some have allot of experience, one guy fishes as a Pro for Duckett and Lew's. I also have friends and family that have very little experience, but love to fish. My oldest son falls into the latter category. One day he asked me to go fishing with him at a small set of ponds not far from our house. He had been catching nice crappie and a few very good LM in these ponds. So I rigged up about 5 rods with the whole assortment of baits, started thinking about how I was going to show him where and how to use these different baits, in short I was gonna take the boy to school. He showed up at the house with 1 spinning reel and a small tackle box, I asked him if that was it and he told me that he thought he had what he needed. So to make a long story short, we get to the ponds and he proceeded to give me a lesson on what makes a jig head with a grub body on it so effective. He probably caught 5 to my 1 that day. Some lessons you don't soon forget.

I think sometimes that guys that don’t spend a lot of time on the water spend a lot of time thinking about gear, techniques, patterns and so on. Sometimes they come up with something without being on the water.
