Why do you hate having to switch hands? It doesn't take long. And if you really want to learn how to cast left handed, just practice.

Practice is all I can suggest. I don't think I could teach myself to do it-been switching hands so long it is a totally automatic response.

I agree with Reb, it just feels like the natural thing to do.

I'm a righty but I've always cast left-handed. Its like trying to train yourself to switch-hit in baseball, the only way you can do it is with plenty of practice. A forgiving reel wont hurt either.

You could do like I did. My baitcasters are left handed reels. I cast right handed and reel with the left, with all my fishing equipment.

How do you get to Carnaige Hall?

Practice, Practice, Practice.

That's the same way you learn to cast left handed if you're right handed naturally.

On the other hand, I never wanted to, since I palm a reel anyway, and you have better leverage on the rod holding it by the reel, than you do by the rod handle.

Try an experiment. Tie your line to a door knob. Back off a few feet. Hold the rod at the reel seat. Pull back. Now do the same thing holding onto the rod handle. See which one gives you more leverage. That couple of inches doesn't sound like much, but moving the fulcrum point on a lever doesn't take much.

FLUKE,

I felt the same way you do many years ago, but I attacked the problem from a different angle. I am right handed, so I buy all left handed reels. This way, I cast right handed and reel left handed. I palm the reel and never change my grip to cast or fight the fish. This gives you the strength in your strong hand to cast or fight the fish, and lets you reel with your weak hand. It just works better for me.

I do the opposite. I'm a righy, but I purposely bought a left handed one. I cast right handed.

I have it pretty good, I can cast better with my left hand than with my right even though I'm right handed. Everyone else i know who fishing can't see how I do that. But I can flip or pitch, sweep cast or over hand cast better with my left hand. It is really convient since I don't have to switch hands all the time. But I would just practice using your left hand until you just get into habit of using it. It is really nice not to have to switch hands all the time, so it would be worth it!

If you're one of those people like me that likes to hold onto the reel rather than the rod, even if you cast left hand you still got to move your hands around some.

Hula, you have a point, but I've even got to the point where sometimes I lazily cast with my hand still palming the reel.

i'm the same way! growing up saltwater fishing for flounder in maryland with a spinning reel got me casting right handed reeling left handed. and i just bought my first bait caster the other day so it just was instinct to cast with the opposit hand that i reel with.
